Listen to advice. As a parent of a toddler, you are probably feeling you have the worst toddler ever! Almost every parent goes through this. Listen to what other parents are saying and if you can use the information, all the better.
Enlist babysitters to give you a break. Everyone wanted to help with that cute little baby, see how loyal they are to you with a toddler. You will need a break just so you can think clearly. Always make "me" time for yourself.
Be consistent. If you do not want to be yelling all the time, start being consistent now. Your toddler will keep on to see how far they can get. Make sure you are consistent so your toddler will not be confused on what the rules are.
Choose punishments your toddler will understand. Time outs are great for toddlers because they quickly learn they cannot do what they want. As a rule of thumb, the time out should not last longer than their age. If your child is disabled, the time out should not last longer than their "mental age."
Use words your toddler can understand. If you want your toddler to talk to you, make sure they can understand you. This is when they will obtain much vocabulary in their life. If you are known for "slips of the tongue", you may want to practice nonsense words as cuss words. You do not want your toddler to say a streak of bad words in church.
Toddlers will need a diaper bag even more than a baby will. If your toddler is still learning to walk or is starting to run band-aids are a necessity. For the potty training toddler, at least one change of clothes, if not two, should always be kept on hand. Snacks and drinks are great to carry with you if you are going to be away from home for any amount of time. A favorite toy should be packed just in case your toddler gets bored with your excursion.
The most important advice about your toddler you will ever get is to enjoy them while they are young. You want to establish a relationship with your child to build on for years to come. Remember, you are your child's first teacher and biggest influence.
