1. Dress Like A Pro
Try to find out more about the dress code required by the company your work for. The best is to wear your most conservative outfits in the first days of work until you find out what's appropriate and what isn't. You have to be aware that first impressions matter the most. Also, keep in mind that people will judge you by the way they perceive you at first glance. You should never underestimate the importance of dressing professionally in your new job.
2. Be Punctual
Try not to be late in your first day at work. Nothing makes a worse first impression than an employee who fails to arrive on time. If you know you have problems with punctuality, wake up earlier than usual to make sure you arrive on time. Double-check the location of your job and how long it takes to get there.
Also, it's very important not to leave from work immediately after your program has ended. Try rather to notice what others are doing and ask them if you have something to do, before you leave.
3. Blend in With Your Co-Workers
Never make arrangements on your first day to meet a friend for lunch or immediately after work. The best is to start socializing with your co-workers. Learn the names of every member of your team and identify the key characters. Take those first few lunches with your co-workers and get to know them.
Keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth relatively shut for the first few days. Be friendly, professional and polite to everyone. Eventually, search for other fellow newbies and spend some time with them at first. Try to familiarize yourself with how the office works and explore the company.
4. Ask Smart Questions
Ask smart questions about the work, even when you may already know the answers. The others will appreciate your attitude and enthusiasm. No one expects you to solve all the organization's problems on your first days on the job, so you should always ask questions whenever you have to. Take notes if necessary, to make sure you won't forget anything important.
5. Get Important Information
The company's human resources department can provide important information related to your job. Don't forget to show your appreciation to everyone who helps you learn the ropes during your first days at the new workplace. Also, avoid saying, "Well, that's not how we did it at my old job."
6. Keep A Positive Attitude
Is it normal to get angry if you're unable to understand something or fail when performing a particular task, but you're not allowed to show any bad feelings at work. Some staff will be friendly towards you; others may be waiting to see how you perform.
If you're nervous, keep reminding yourself that this is your first day - it's not another interview. Establishing yourself as a helpful, hard worker is the best reputation you can have in an office.
