Practical Tips to Help You Become a Successful eBay Seller!

Jason Medina
eBay is the largest and most popular online auction site in existence today. What started out as a small, online auction site for people looking to buy and sell pez dispensers and other small knick-knacks, eBay has grown exponentially and is now a giant worldwide marketplace that links millions and millions of people buying and selling anything from rare coins and stamps, to vehicles, clothing, and time shares. If an item or a product is in existence, you can bet that it can be found on eBay! Due to its size and worldwide reach, many people, realizing the potential that eBay offers, earn a significant income by selling products on eBay. As an experienced eBay seller, I have come to the conclusion that to be successful selling on eBay, you have to do two things: find the right products, and find them at the right price!

It sounds easy enough. You simply decide what you want to sell, and then you go out and buy those products at a cheap enough price so that you can turn around and sell them on eBay for a profit. I wish it were that easy. For many people maybe it is that easy, but my experience tells me that it's not that easy. And the reason it's not that easy is due to the size of eBay's marketplace. For all of the benefits that eBay's popularity and size offers the seller looking to reach as many people as possible, there is also a major drawback: increased competition! There's countless other people just like you looking to cash in on an eBay business.

Too many times I have located a seemingly popular product at a great price - a winning combination that I was sure would result in a nice profit from selling on eBay - only to have my hopes dashed when I checked on eBay and found everyone's aunt, uncle, cousin, and sister-in-law twice removed selling the same damn thing! And to make matters worse, with all of this competition, the selling price of said product was so deflated that it would not be worth it to me to sell it on eBay. Sure, I might be able to make a few cents profit, or even a $1.00 or so, but that would be about it. So, I have learned that finding a product that is being sold at a cheap or bargain-basement price does not guarantee success selling it on eBay. It's wise to to check on eBay - either on the currently listed items page or the closed auctions page - to see what the history of that products sales on eBay have been like. That will give you a good indication as to what you could reasonably expect by selling it on eBay.

The other main thing to consider in terms of selling a product on eBay is its popularity. As I have learned over and over again, is that even if you find a product that is indeed priced very low, and even if you can buy that product at a price that seems to be well below what others are selling it for on eBay, that does not guarantee success. If an item is not in demand or is not a product that is actively being sought on eBay, you will have a tough time selling it, no matter how cheaply you acquire it. I learned that the hard way.

When I was just starting out on eBay and trying to decide what to sell, I would be excited and thrilled when I would find an item that was priced so low that it was impossible for anyone else to sell it any cheaper. I would buy as many of those items as I could and then list them as fast as I could on eBay. And then nothing happened. And then I would relist the item and again nothing happened. After a while, I was in a position where I was stuck with a huge supply of items that just would not sell on eBay. It didn't matter if I paid $5 dollars or 5 cents for them; they wouldn't sell! So, building on the previous paragraph where I stressed the importance of finding products that would sell for a reasonable profit, you also have to make sure that a product will in fact sell at all. The price of the product is irrelevant if it just won't sell period!

So, as a semi-experienced eBay seller who is still learning and trying to improve my selling abilities, I do know that it takes at minimum two things to really succeed at selling on eBay: finding products that will sell, and finding them at a cheap enough price to ensure that you make a profit. If you succeed at those two things, you will virtually guarantee your success selling on eBay. Sure, there are other things that matter in terms of being a successful "eBayer" - customer service skills, listing skills, taking quality photographs and writing good, descriptive product descriptions - but if you are selling a popular product at a cheap enough price for you to make a profit, the product will virtually sell itself!
