Practical Tips in Making Your Own Holiday Gift Basket

Holiday gift-giving need not be as expensive as it is portrayed in advertisements and other media campaigns. It is more practical to go with what you can afford (or even less) than spend all you have. A holiday gift basket has become an institution in the cost-effective way of gift-giving. It has become ultimately, the ideal gift of choice during Christmas because not only does it cost less (if you make the right choices), but it also needs the person putting it together to put a lot of heart and thought into it, and thus giving the holiday gift basket an edge among all other gifts.

There are many items that you can put together to make a wonderful holiday gift basket. The first thing you must do is put together a list of the people you want to give it to. This way, you can determine how many holiday gift baskets you will need to make. Now, beside each names (can be individuals or collective like couples or families), jot down what you think will most likely fit their personalities or what you think they will like. It doesn't have to be complicated and you don't have to crunch your brains to figure it out. Stick to simple and the obvious. You're giving them a holiday gift basket which means you know them well-enough. And if not, you can pick up that phone and ask someone who does.

Be creative by personalizing your holiday gift basket. Keep in mind that if you personalize, it will reflect your effort, consideration, and love into the creation of this gift. Don't be afraid to try different things as you customize. Your creativity will flow if you let it.

Decide on your theme - the concept. What will the holiday gift basket contain? Will it be like a potpourri of different things? Will it be a basket of the same thing but of different brands? Will it all be food? Its uniqueness will come from your answers to four very simple questions. Will you be giving the holiday gift basket to an individual or to a group of people? Which age-group does the recipient belong to? How much are you willing to spend?

The container - the basket itself, is as important as the inside. Again, it's not difficult, just be creative. You can buy wicker baskets or if you have spare trays, planters, or pots at home, you can use them to hold your gifts. If the container you have is deep and you have limited stuff to put in, get filler materials like paper (preferably brown) or Styrofoam. You can even personalize these fillers by considering the recipient. For example, if you're giving it to a child, you can use shredded colored papers or comics and if the recipient is highly concerned of the environment, you can use corn husks.

Gather all the contents of the holiday gift basket. By this time, you should've decided on your theme. Remember, the contents need not be expensive. You can even make homemade cookies and put them in cookie jars and then accentuate the cookie jars to reflect your theme. If the recipient likes books, you can go to thrift bookstores or if you have old books you don't want to keep anymore, you can trade them for new ones. It may not come totally for free but it will definitely give you great savings. You can wrap the books in brown papers and then accentuate the wrapper - you can draw, cut and paste, or you can even involve the members of your family by letting them put different artworks on it.

If you are really crunching on what to put in your holiday gift basket, good places to hit are Dollar type stores. They have all sorts of things that come in really cheap. You can also get your containers, fillers, and finishing decors on these stores.

Finally, it's always a good finishing touch to put ribbons on your holiday gift basket. Stick with your theme and remember, you can never go wrong with the colors green and red to add to the Christmas feel.
