Praying a More Effective Prayer

Lee Andrew Henderson
Any Christian knows that a very important part of their walk with God is prayer. Some who have tried praying may claim it doesn't work, but it does. Perhaps you are just praying wrong. Here are a few tips for more effective prayer.

Be Righteous
In Psalm 34:17 the Bible says "The righteous cry out and the Lord hears them". Being a righteous person means to be someone who has a strong relationship with God. If you don't have a relationship with God then God might not answer your prayers until you first pray to receive him.

Be Earnest
One of the problems with people saying their prayers is exactly that, they say them. Many people pray the same time at church, before meals or before they go to bed as a chore. You shouldn't say your prayers; you should pray your prayers. Praying isn't just talking it is an intimate conversation. Always mean business when you pray to God. Be intimate, serious and earnest when you pray to God.

Be Specific
One of the problems with praying is that we aren't specific enough. Sometimes you might pray for something specific if you know somebody who is sick or hurting but often our prayers are too general. We might pray for the President or bless the troops, well what about them? What is it you want for the President? How do you want the troops to be blessed? If you're starving and all you really need is a loaf of bread, then ask for a loaf of bread. It might seem silly to ask for something that specific, but that is how God answers prayers.

Be A Believer
Do you every pray to God with the thought, "I hope this works." If so then you are not praying right. You should always go to God with the belief that he will answer your prayers, not he might answer my prayers. We should also believe in God enough that we can ask for anything no matter how tall an order it is. Nothing is too big for God.

Understanding Prayer
This might be one of the most difficult aspects of prayer for people to get straight. Not every prayer should just be you asking God to do something. Some prayers are about listening as much as asking. Before you ask God for anything you should first listen to Him and make sure it is something he wants you to pray for.

I was once told also sometimes you shouldn't ask for material things or for it to be all that you want for yourself.

Great article, Lee. I sometimes feel that my prayers are falling short of the mark -- like I'm not doing it right. Thanks for this article.
