Praying: When a Prayer is the Best We Can Do for Someone

Do Your Prayers Count?

Sherry Tomfeld
If you're not a Christian and you don't believe in praying, this article about praying is not for you. If you're a Christian, believe in prayers and want to help people. Then this article is pointed directly towards you. Prayer and praying are personal. Some people think that praying is a waste of time, that they are never heard or answered. Some people think that praying everyday and for everything is an abuse of what God meant it to be. I preface this article by saying I don't know what's right and wrong. I know how I use prayer and I know prayer works. I also know that God answers prayers in His time and in His way, which is always what is right for us, even when we don't realize it.

I have an AC friend called Jack who is going through some real health trials. Jack and I don't personally know each other. We both write for Associated Content and know each other through our "work". But Jack let me know he was having health problems and he asked me to pray for him. Did I? You bet! Why? Because Jack trusted that I would, he wants the Lord to hear from people praying for his health. It makes Jack feel good to know that we will pray for him. He believes in prayer.

How many times do you wish you could help someone? But you don't have the time, money or where-with-all to do anything? Prayer is something that anyone can do at anytime. You don't have to deposit a quarter to have God hear your prayer. You can pray at work, on your way to work, on your couch, in front of your tv, computer or washing machine. You can pray for rain, pray for health, pray for families struck by disasters, ask for guidance in your life and for help with a sick cow.

One thing I have learned and believe is that God hears ALL our prayers. God is our father and we are His children. Of course He is going to listen to our prayers. How God answers prayers is another thing. Sometimes we don't understand when we pray for help and end up going broke. Or when we pray for a sick friend or family member and they end up dying. But God hears our prayers, its just that He knows better than we do what is good and right. We may never understand while we are still mortals down here on earth. But I have complete faith that we will all understand when we get back home to God.

Do your prayers count? We are not to chant and we are to ask in Jesus name what we are praying for. To my very limited knowledge, that is it for "rules". God wants to comfort us, heal us and guide us. Does God care who prays? No. Everyone is free to pray to God, I am not aware of God picking and choosing.

Do prayers work? I think you have to sincerely mean what you pray for. I think you have to BELIEVE that God will hear you praying and answer the prayer. Many miracles have been directly linked to prayers. Prayer is a gift for those who need help and those who are giving help via prayers.

Prayers. I say them everyday. Some for blessings for my food, for health and healing for myself and others and for the world that is in turmoil. Being asked to say a prayer for someone is an honor. Praying is the best that I can do for people who I want to help. Be well Jack! Prayers have been said.

Sherry, bless you for praying for people. And Jack's testimony is phenomenal! I'm so glad I turned to your article --it is truly inspired and anointed. Good is so good, to connect us with believers even through AC. David's comment about group prayer is interesting, and I think the only reason that could be true if in fact it is true is that people who are not praying in faith, who really do not believe God will intercede, weaken prayer. ("God, help So and So to be strong while this terrible disease eats them alive" not a healing prayer)God even sends angels to carry out answers to our prayers -- but then some say "God won't help me" and the angels have to turn around and go back. He is always there, always hearing, always answering, always having everything in His hands if we ASK HIM TO AND THEN LEAVE IT THERE. So we can just relax and wait for blessings and miracles. Hallelujah!

It feels good to help in this way... sadly, a great deal of research done in the past few years actually demonstrates that people prayed over by groups do less well than those not. Mybe the variable is the organized group part. I always felt that personal prayer had the most power.
