Pre-Season OC Firings Aren't Paying Off

This year, three NFL teams surprised the league by firing their offensive coordinators before the start of the regular season. The unprecedented moves were for a variety of different reasons ranging from a clash of philosophies to a lack of production.

Five weeks into the season, one thing is clear, the last second coaching changes made by the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have not paid off.

Several weeks after Chan Gailey (Chiefs), Jeff Jagodzinski (Buccaneers) and Turk Schonert (Bills) were released; the three franchises have a combined 1-14 record. The Bills are the only team with a victory this season and that win came against Tampa Bay.

It should be no surprise that the three teams also are near the bottom of the league in offense, averaging 27th in the league in yards per game and 26th in points per game.

The Chiefs and Buccaneers each have a rookie head coach and they are likely safe. But the firing of Schonert could prove costly for Bills' Coach Dick Jauron. Jauron is rumored to be on the hot seat and, without drastic improvement, may be replaced mid-season.
