Precious Film Star, Gabourey (Gabby) Sidibe: Enough About Her Weight ...What About Her Awesome Talent?

Memmay Moore
If you have not seen the movie Precious, starring one of the best new actresses ever, Gabourey (Gabby) Sidibe, you are missing out on an amazing film....one you will never forget......It will shock you and break your heart, but you will not be able to look away.

Precious, the main character, played brilliantly by newcomer, Gabby Sidibe will repulse you, scare you, make you weep, and make you laugh. You will find yourself caring deeply for her, as her life goes from worse to worse.

Precious the film, shows the every day struggle one teen faces to merely survive in the 1980's Harlem. The language is rough and raw. Harlem is dark and dreary. For Clareece (Precious) Jones, the most dangerous place for her is in her own home, and the people most likely to harm her, are her own parents... her mother and her father.

Based on the novel Push written by Sapphire in 1997, Precious is the story of a severely overweight, illiterate teen girl, named Precious, who is pregnant with her second child. She is invited to attend an alternative school in Harlem, where the people there can turn her life around with education and social services. This opportunity is just what she needs. But for Precious, getting out of the house every day, is an ordeal.

When she is not getting raped or impregnated by her father, Precious is getting physically and verbally beat up by her mother, who forces her to eat and become even more obese. Outside on the street, Precious deals with her tormentors by clocking them on the side of the head. The girl can be tough.

At home, Precious survives her misery by shutting down and plugging into her inner fantasy life; one in which she is lovely, talented, and cared about by the people in her life. She dances. She smiles. She primps in front of the mirror trying to look pretty. Buried deep inside Precious, is a sweet, thoughtful, brave young woman, who still has the capacity for happiness, hope and tenderness.

Gabby Sidibe plays the role of Precious brilliantly. She is Precious Jones through and through...her speech, her eyes, her fashions, her expressions... and her size which seems to be the only thing people want to talk about. .

On interviews, the 26 year old Ms. Sibide comes across as a happy, confident, articulate young actress, who does not view her weight as a handicap. She would like to lose weight someday. But right now she is on top of the world. She has career plans and goals, and losing weight isn't a priority. Maybe it's no one's business about how she feels about her weight. The girl is awesome.

It seems however, whenever Ms, Sibide is discussed in the media, the focus is on her weight, rather than on her remarkable talent in making this remarkable film.

The film Precious has won several awards and honors, and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture, along with Ms. Sibide as Best Actress. Comedienne Monique, who played Precious' mother, won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Does John Goodman get asked questions about his weight? Does his weight prevent him from getting good movie and television roles? Did he ever get nominated for an Oscar? Does being female make it OK to be judged by your weight?

There are many obese people in the world. You see them every day. They have lives like everyone else. They deserve to be represented in films. I would much rather see a film starring Gabby Sibide than one with Sarah Jessica Parker.

The ever wearisome Howard Stern spent days dissing Oscar nominated, Ms.Sibide about her weight. Did he expect her to apologize?

A weight loss company has invited Gabby Sibide to be their spokesperson.

Even America's sweetheart, Sandra Bullock, while accepting her own Best Actress Award at the Oscars and beating out newcomer Ms Sibide, got into the act. She looked over and patronizingly asked Gabby, "if she was having a good time at the show, wearing such a pretty dress." Would she talk to Meryl Streep like that ?

It is a sad world we live in, when people feel comfortable to publicly put down such an incredibly talented young woman like Gabby Sibide. They rarely treat overweight male actors that way.

Precious the film, is now available on Pay Per View TV and DVD. I would rate this film 5 out of 5 stars and give it a R rating due to it's strong language and content. If you want to see an amazing young actress, see this film.

I haven't seen the movie, but have seen enough trailers to agree that Ms. Sidibe is as good an actress as you'll find anywhere. I agree with your sentiment... weight shouldn't even have been a topic of discussion concerning her nomination. But the ever-hypocritical, ever-looks conscious media and Hollywood elites have to have their say. Great article!

then the people that talk about all the actress is their pretty dresses or not so pretty dresses are all patronizing?

women talk about pretty dresses, and maybe sandra would have gone up to meryl streep to tell her what a beautiful dress she was wearing and which designer made it. This is hollywood. Though I agree with you about the weight as I have had to live with that all my life the pretty dress may have been genuine.

    ABSOLUTELY AGREE!!!!

Absolutely agree that we are obsessed with perfect weight, and tend to dismiss those who may not live up to the Follywood standards of anorexia.
