Precious - a Movie Review

R. Hill
To be precious requires you to be special in someone's eyes no matter what you have done in life. Well this movie is the total opposite of a kid's dream of being loved by those around them. The movie starts off with a young girl named Precious sitting in a class room day dreaming about being the love interest of her math teacher. Wow, how many of us fantasized about a teacher in high school, that scene made it easy for the audience to relate to the young girl and her dreams of loving someone.

The young girl is pushed into a life of self doubt and fear of not being loved. Monique plays the young girls mother and she plays the role with passion and a vengeance for pain. I have never seen a mother similar to the role she is playing, the only one that comes close is Kathy Bates in the movie Misery, where she breaks James Caan's legs and does not allow him to leave her. Now imagine that person being 10 times meaner. That is the role Monique pulled out of her own hurt and pain as a young child being molested herself.

Sapphire was the author of the book and the original title was called Push but was changed for the movie debut. The movie was about a young lady growing up without a loving father or mother, and it showed that it can be hard on just about any young girl of any race or background. Every scene brought you closure into the young girls world of neglect and abuse. Not only did you see the hurt and pain she experienced, but you also saw the joy she created in her own mind to fight off the hurt of every day life of a mother that despised her.

Precious was molested by the man that was suppose to love and protect her, and her mother failed to be her last wall of defense, to shield her from the abusive relationship that would ultimately destroy the mother and daughter bound that once was. Sometimes our youth have the ability to fight through the drama in their lives with the right mentors and peer support. Precious was befriended by her principle, teacher, and her new classmates. She was even showed respect and love from the hospital assistant male nurse.

Sometimes life does not turn out the way you want it too, but in this movie Precious made life and her children her mission and purpose to succeed. This movie showed the world that sometimes family members make mistakes and hurt the ones they love to obtain the wrong love. But in the end Precious pulled her new friends and family closer to her and made them part of her precious world.

  • Incest in the house hold by a close family member
  • Abuse by parents verbal and physical
  • Mentors taking a stand in a kids life
Many young boys and girls are molested by a family member, but don't inform anyone for fear of that person being hurt or being looked upon by family members and not one of them.
