Pregnancy and Bed Rest: Beat the Boredom

Casey L. Holley
Bed rest during pregnancy may seem like a dream for some pregnant women; however, for women on extended bed rest, it isn't any fun. Bed rest may be ordered by an obstetrician for a variety of reasons. Placenta previa, preterm labor risk, unexplained bleeding, high blood pressure or multiples are a few of these reasons.

Boredom can be a real problem when you are on bed rest, especially if your doctor has restricted the ways you can sit up or lay down.

Scrapbook

Start a scrapbook for your baby. If you have older children, you can involve them in the process. To get the supplies you want for the scrapbook, check out the websites of local stores or mass merchants to find what you want. Save the information and have someone go pick up your order. Some stores will allow you to place your order online and pay for it online, but pick it up from the store.

Game or Movie Night

Plan a night of playing board games or card games with your family or friends. Even if you have to lay down while you play, it will still get you out of the boredom slump. Have someone pop popcorn for you or make another snack that you will enjoy.

Birth Plan

Making your birth plan can take some time, especially if you thoroughly research all of the options available. Use the Internet to research different options you have, such as a water birth, natural birth or medication assisted birth. Once you decide on what type of birth you would like, start to plan it out. When you do this, remember that a birth plan is only a plan of what you would like to see happen-it isn't a plan that will be followed exactly as you plan it-unless you are one of the luck women who have a perfect birth.

Your birth plan project doesn't start once you decide what type of birth you want. You can also write out back up birth plans for each of the other types of birth, including a Caesarean section (C-section) that way you know what to expect and have an idea of what you would like regardless of the type of birth you have.

Rest

Yes, you can rest while you are on bed rest. But, this doesn't mean that you have to just lie down and stare at the ceiling. Use your time on bed rest to read a book you want to read. You can even take an online class (many are free).

If you are on bed rest, this is the time to do things that you won't be able to do once the baby is born.
