Pregnancy Brain: Is it Real?

Erin Rivera
There is a condition that is commonly known as pregnancy brain. Many women claim to experience it during their first and last trimester. It happens during a pregnancy when the mom to be starts to become more forgetful and has a harder time concentrating on things. Here is a look at pregnancy brain and some possible explanations for it.

While many doctors and researchers have claimed pregnancy brain to just be a myth, there have been several different studies conducted on it with some outcomes proving that it may just be an actual condition. Several women have gone on to claim they have experienced pregnancy brain. Claims include being extra forgetful, having trouble concentrating and overly emotional which leaves them feeling unable to do every day tasks they once had no problem with.

There are a few possible explanations for why a pregnant woman may experience this condition. One of the contributing factors includes her going through a period where she cannot sleep well. This usually occurs during the last trimester where it is hard to find a comfortable position to sleep in. Other pregnant women find they are so apprehensive about their delivery date and the idea of bringing home a new baby they have trouble sleeping. Lack of sleep can lead to the inability to concentrate and remember things.

Another factor that can contribute to pregnancy brain is the hormonal changes pregnant women go through. While pregnant the body goes through some amazing changes. One of these changes includes a higher level of the hormone progesterone. Typically during the first trimester women will experience higher levels of this hormone which can cause them to be extra tired, extremely sensitive and emotional as well as causing headaches. This can lead to issues with being able to remember certain things.

Although there is no cure for this temporary state, there are ways to help relieve some of the side effects. Taking extra naps can help the body and mind feel rested. As always, eating a good, balanced diet is also essential in helping a pregnant women function on a daily basis. Exercise can also help. Even just going for a short walk outside can help. The best part is, after a pregnant woman delivers her baby, the condition ends and she will be able to concentrate on caring for her new baby.
