Pregnancy Facts All New Mommies Should Expect

Jeanne Marie Kerns
Having had seven babies my youngest just 10 months old, I do believe I can give all you new Mommies an idea of what exactly to expect in your nine month
journey of the unknown. Now do not be afraid, everything that I am going to tell you is a normal part of pregnancy.

First and foremost let us discuss the ever so famous "morning sickness". I am officially changing it to the "morning, day and night sickness" since in all of my pregnancies and anyone else I know that has been pregnant, not one time has it only been in the morning.

Morning, day and night sickness can happen as early as three weeks into your pregnancy. You might not be throwing up quite this early, but you will be feeling nauseated or queezy. Then around six weeks comes the throwing up part. If your not doing either of these, be thankful ! Not everyone who is pregnant gets the morning, day and night sickness. If you do I advise you to take a B-6 vitamin as soon as you wake up ! This is the miracle that saved me from staying in bed all day with my youngest daughter. Once you have taken the B-6 pill, wait 30 minutes then eat some salted crackers with ginger ale. Yes it sounds nasty, but it works trust me.

Do not be alarmed as to what makes you sick once you start. With my second daughter, just the smell of my husband made me sick. He would come up to kiss me and I would be off and running to the bathroom. For some the smell of meat bothers them, my last pregnancy tomatoes made me sick to my stomach and I love tomatoes. A warning however, if you cannot keep anything down for more than 48 hours, contact your OBGYN immediately, you do not want to dehydrate yourself.

Let's move on now to the awful indigestion, I personally would rather deal with being nauseated all day then this. With all my pregnancies, indigestion was the worst thing I had, especially with my sons. It would begin at three months and continue all the way until they were born. Making it go away was not easy, do not let anyone tell you that it completely goes away, cause it does not. You can take certain things to subside it for a little while, but it comes back eventually. I have tried everything from watching what I eat, to milk, heavy cream, antacids, even prescription medicine. Still, it was there until the end and it is awful! This is just one of those pregnancy things you need to expect and deal with in your own way. Again do not worry, it is a normal part of being pregnant, after all your stomach has been completely relocated.

The dreaded stretch marks. Again do not let anyone tell you that creaming your body will keep the stretch marks away. With my first daughter, I rubbed cocoa butter on my stomach all day long and they still showed up. The best thing to do is learn to deal with the fact that you might get stretch marks. It is a normal part of being pregnant. You can use cocoa butter so that they're not as red, but the stretch mark is there to stay!

Back pain is another affect of being pregnant. When standing up, try and keep your back straight. You might also want to get yourself a pregnancy belt. This helps enormously. It goes underneath your belly like invisible hands to help you distribute all that belly weight evenly.

Although I never had one during any of my pregnancies (thankfully), my daughter unfortunately developed a hemorrhoid during her pregnancy. This can be cause be pressure, pushing to hard while using the bathroom, or front sitting on a hard surface to long. Do not panic, buy some witch hazel and some cotton balls. Soak the cotton balls in the witch hazel and place on the hemorrhoid. Sounds awful, but it works and helps the swelling enormously. You can also by over the counter medicine that helps control the swelling as well.

Being tired is also another part of being pregnant especially after eight weeks. It comes on sudden and eventually you will have to just lie down and take a nap. It might even overwhelm you at times, but do not worry it too will pass. Taking a vitamin b-6 will help if you do not have time to nap during the day.

Over eating and cravings. If you are hungry, then eat, and eat what you want. You have plenty of time after the pregnancy to lose whatever weight you have gained. Do not worry about dieting unless your doctor advises you to cut certain foods out of your diet. Enjoy your pregnancy, and it eating ice cream with Doritos is your thing, then do it!

Last but not least the mood swings. There will be some days where you will just want to scream, and other days where you just want to cry. Relax, it is just your hormones changing and it is perfectly normal. When you feel angry, inform everyone that your not having a good day, and relax. When you feel like your going to cry, just cry and let it out. This will eventually subside as your pregnancy goes into the later stages.

As with any pregnancy, many women experience all kinds of different emotions, and quirks. Best thing for you to do is write them down so the next time you are pregnant, you won't be so worried if certain things start to happen again.

Wishing you all happy and healthy pregnancies !
