The first thing you should do is remember not to be embarrassed, this is a lot easier said than done so less look at the facts. For a lot of females having their water break is no more than a small amount of fluid and not the waterfall TV and movies portray it to be.
When your water does break the first thing you should do is go to the restroom. Going to the hospital is naturally the first choice for most people but remember you have two hours according to most doctors. Once your in the restroom put on a sanitary napkin. This will help prevent any real messes to your clothing or car.
Once your water breaks you will continue to leak fluids so this is an important step to take. The next thing you want to do is notify your doctor. Most doctors will have you come right in but I can promise you as a experience mother you can clean up first. If you are close enough to your home feel free to go home and change, take a shower, and gather your stuff. For a first time mom you rarely give birth within a couple of hours. If you are an experience mother than you already know what to do!
Once your water breaks, and in most cases the doctor will have to break it, labor will shortly follow so be prepared to head to the hospital.
Some tips to remember when you know your time is counting down is to 1) Always carry fresh clothing with you or in your car. This will come in handy if your water does break. 2) Keep sanitary napkins in your purse - if your water does break you will need these. 3) If your water breaks do not attempt to drive yourself. Labor can be take a long time or come very quickly. Do not be afraid to ask for help.
The chances of your water breaking in public is very slim, but it has happened. Preparing yourself for the worse will make it a lot easier to deal with if the dreaded nightmare of your water breaking does occur. One a final note, remember that if your water does break that is sure sign that labor is not far away.
