A woman who plans on getting pregnant after 40 needs to remain level headed. That means she should not let fear get in the way of her decision to become a mother during midlife. Fear can only lead to stress, and stress can lead to complications during pregnancy. That's why it's important for women to be able to tune out any negative thoughts about negative things they have been told about older women having babies. Women are often only told about the negative consequences that can occur such as the baby having genetic abnormalities, or dangers to her own health. While it's true that the risks may be somewhat higher for women who conceive a child after age 35, the odds of having a healthy baby are still in their favor. This even goes for a 45 year old. So it's best to focus on the positive. This should help diminish any unnecessary fears.
There are a number of medical tests that an expectant mother can have done. This may help alleviate any potential fears about getting pregnant after 40. For example, there are blood tests that can determine the likelihood of certain birth defects. Genetic counseling can tell a woman for sure if her baby has Down's syndrome, or other chromosomal abnormalities. These tests can give a mother a piece of mind that her baby is doing just fine, several months before birth.
The best rule of thumb is to follow advice from a physician and do everything necessary to help nurture the development of the fetus. Having a good diet, and avoiding things that can be harmful such as smoking and alcohol are the best things a mother-to-be can do, regardless of her age. Conceiving at this age is not that big of a deal if you take care of yourself both emotionally and physically. Just be aware that there are certain risks to getting pregnant after 40, but the benefits far outweigh them.
