Pregnant British Samantha Orobator Faces Possible Execution by Firing Squad

Outrageous! Samantha Orobator, a 20 year British citizen of Nigerian descent, is being held by Thailand officials on charges of drug trafficking and is facing the possibility of getting executed by a firing squad. Orobator was reportedly arrested on August 5th of 2008 and had been in a Laos's prison, where it is reported she got pregnant.

Allegedly, Samantha was carrying about 1.1 pounds of heroin when she was arrested, and that amount apparently merits the death penalty in Thailand.

I don't know what sorts of rules of law exist in Thailand, but goodness this has got to be the cruelest of punishments. Whatever happened to the punishment fitting the crime, or is this only in the US of A? How could a young girl who is carrying another life, be subject to a cruel death because she was allegedly carrying a not so significant amount of drug?

Believe me, I am not excusing this girl. Drug trafficking is not good in any sense. I wonder what or who would lead such a beautiful young girl to follow such a path. Perhaps she was being used as a pawn by some more powerful force, or she made her own erroneous mistake that has unwelcoming consequences.

Whatever the case, I personally object to Thailand's method of justice. There has got to be other punishment for her crime if she indeed is found to be guilty. But death sentence by firing squad? This should outrage anyone who values human life.

Orobator is reportedly being tried this week in Laos. She is due to deliver her baby this September. I hope to God that the Thai government does not make a horrible mistake of taking her life, or that of her unborn, innocent child. They should wait for her to deliver her baby, and then go to trial for a lesser punishment if found guilty.

It is reported that the British government is providing Samantha with lawyer, as is Reprieve, a human rights advocacy agency in London. I hope they do quickly and help this girl, as word has that Laos is a most dangerous prison to be in.

Well, it isnt fair in the USA either. White folk can sell, and do drugs and get away with it, because most of them are already rich. If you are poor and Black and get caught, you go to jail for a long time.

She is being held in Lao by the Laotian not the Thais. It is really important to get the facts straight before commenting. It makes us all look ignorant otherwise.

I have every sympathy with the girl.
