Pregnant Man - True or False?

Lisa Carley
The news has recently exploded with stories of the so called "pregnant man", known as Thomas Beatie. For those of you living under a rock, Thomas Beatie was born as a female. He had gender reassessment surgery and also had his breasts surgically removed, but decided to keep his female organs. Thomas Beatie is now legally considered a man, and is married to his wife, Nancy.

Nancy Beatie inseminated her husband's still intact vagina with donor sperm, resulting in this pregnancy. The couple chose to have a child this way after learning that Nancy was unable to conceive due to severe endometriosis resulting in a hysterectomy, though she does have two adult children from a previous relationship.

While I have no problem with any couple that is stable, able, loving and caring enough to have children, I do have a problem with the media labeling Thomas Beatie as a pregnant "man". Yes, he has a beard. Supposedly, he has a penis of some sort. Yes, Thomas has a wife. Yes, he is legally a man. However, Thomas Beatie was born a woman and still has the female reproductive organs as well as an intact vagina! In my opinion, this certainly makes Thomas Beatie a woman, regardless of how he portrays himself.

I feel that the attention the couple has given themselves by telling their story to the world is their own right, but at the same time, at a glimpse, it is not what it seems and is terribly misleading. If the couple wants a baby, can care for the baby in a healthy and loving manner, I congratulate them! But they should share their pregnancy for what it really is: a lesbian couple that have conceived with a donor sperm, which is really not that remarkable. Until Thomas Beatie has his female organs removed and his vagina disappears for good, they will not be considered husband and wife in my book!

In short, this, to me, was a tacky way to receive attention in the public light. The title of "pregnant man" does not belong to Thomas Beatie! It is untruthful and misguiding! I feel sorry for the children that see this headline and think that this is possible when it is not. The media should be more responsible in what they portray to the public and how they word their stories. As with anything else, make sure you dig deeper and read the fine print before believing anything!

Thomas is legally considered a male because he had gender reassessment surgery and his breasts removed, but still has an intact vagina and reproductive organs.
