Prejudice

James Worthy
Racial prejudice is common among people no matter the color of the skin tone. The idea of white supremacy is installed within all people especially in America, "... because it is typically endorsed, condoned, or ignored." (Lewis 7) In my high school, there are three main ethnicities that make up the student body: Blacks, Hispanics, and Arabics. There have been many incidents where one ethnic group would come against anther ethnic group for any insignificant reason they could think of. Not all people were like this, but a majority was. I personally was affected by these situations at school. I have friends of different ethnicities but this came into question when a joke went wrong. A former friend shouted during a black history month presentation, "I hate BLACK PEOPLE!!!" This shocked me the most because I considered him a friend. I tried to shrug it off but he continually boasted about the situation as if it was the best thing he had done in his life. I ended this friendship by no longer talking to him.

This situation that I went through is the basic idea of white supremacy. "... when people of color compete with, betray, or abandon one another they reinforce the broad structure of domination that is their common enemy." (Lewis 8) Even though wasn't a man of color, he was Arabic. I thought we had a common bond of persecution since the attack of 9/11. He fed into the "white supremacy" idea by trying to make a mockery of black people. I too submitted into the idea by viciously retaliating with taunts of his heritage. Now that I look back, everyone in my high school surrendered to the system of white supremacy because our behavior toward one another.
