Premiere of Kid Nation: Will These Kids Survive?

Controversy Abounds This Reality TV Series

The first I heard about Kids Nation was from my 8 year old grandson and Daughter who mentioned that there was going to be an audition for this show the next day in Miami...what was this I wanted to know and I soon found out...My next thought was oh no, did my little Vinnie want to take part in this? Well, it seemed he was interested but when he found out just what it would entail, he quickly changed his mind...

So what is this show soon to be on the air? I've since read quite a lot of stories and hype about it and have to say it does sound intriguing in a strange way...

The concept:

40 kids get together in an old deserted old mining town, now a ghost town, called Bonanza City, located in new Mexico...Their goal is to bring this town back to life and they will do so my any means....They will be completely on their own and set up their own sort of "government" by voting for four leaders who make up their own laws and bylaws.. They even set bedtimes for themselves and the younger ones...Unlike other reality shows of this nature there is no-one voted out but anyone child who wants to leave has that prerogative.

The Brave New World:

These kids, aged 8-15 have 40 days in which to create this new world and they must do it all themselves with no help from adults or their families...They must feed themselves, cook, clean, clothe themselves, bring in their own water and even clean their own outhouses, you can imagine this is not the chore any of them want to have. They even start and run their own business, and appropriately open a saloon...no alcohol served, but Root Beer will be the drink of choice.

Coping

This is not going to be easy as each child still has to deal with their own problems and emotions...many will be homesick, others, become a bit overbearing and peer pressure is bound to be a factor...do the older kids come down too hard on the younger ones? Some will most likely be rebels and want to break the rules, or do they?

Controversial issues

Are they able to confront the hardships and stick it out? Already there is controversy and a few accusations of child neglect have come to the forefront, when one little girl said she was burned while cooking, another said a few kids got ill from drinking out of unmarked bottles, thinking it was water when in fact it was some sort of cleaning solvent...but nobody really got too hurt and, truth be told, there were plenty of adults just a short distance away to take care of an needed emergencies.... But they did not interfere with the regular progression of the show in any way and the kids really did come together in the long run which is demonstrated during a town meeting where one of the participants wins a real gold star worth $20,000....all this leads to a Grand finale, with bigger and better awards as well as huge surprises.

But the question remains, how many do decide to leave before the shows final conclusion and just how difficult will it prove to be for them...Were child labor laws disregarded? The producers adamantly say they weren't and that the final outcome of the show will prove that...

It all remains to be seen and I know I will have some sort of morbid curiosity to watch Kid Nation when it begins this Wednesday, September 19th at 8:00 P.M on CBS...will I stick it out?...That also remains to be seen.

I haven't heard of this one either. Of course, I don't watch a lot of T.V. I does sound interesting. :-)

My son was glued to the set! At first, I thought that I could take it or leave it, but then my son started jabbering, and continued to talk through the whole thing. It made me feel good that he wanted to have conversation with me, and gave me a little insight as to how his 12-year-old brain was working (that day). (Most sentences started with, "You know what I would do..") We'll definitely watch it again. If nothing else it'll be a bonding experience for us. Hooray!

I personally like the show. My husband wouldn't even sit in the same room while I watched it. I think the concept is an interesting one and I wish my kids could have gone through the same experience. Shows them how the real world works.

I've heard of this programme and I really don't like the sound of it. I believe that children need adult supervision and guidance. Without it, I can see a lot of problems cropping up that they will not be mature enough to cope with.
