What can you do to prepare?
Many experts say, "pay off your credit cards now!" Perhaps it is too late for that. In the Great Depression of the past cash was king. Instead of paying off your credit cards and other interest debts, pay the minimums because you will need cash later. The best thing to do with cash is put it in a safety deposit box at the bank. Don't buy CD's or put the money in savings. And, don't buy precious metals. Cash was and will be king. So, pay the minimum on your cards and put all you can into the safety deposit box.
When the banks crash and they scream, "pay us what you owe on your cards." Don't sweat it. Debt resolution will be based on pennies and not dollars. Keep your cash for living not debts.
Consider your job for a minute. If the worst comes to pass will you have a job? If you are in the service industry, you can count on being unemployed early on. If you have a trade the odds are you will be able to find work even if your pay is barter. Doctors, nurses, police, firemen, teachers and the like are pretty insulated from unemployment. They may have enormous pay cuts but their skills will always be needed.
Do you live in an apartment? If so, buy a house or at least land. It is easy to plow up the lawn and plant a garden. In the Great Depression of the thirties, city dwellers in apartments and brownstones with no land had to move in with relatives. Without a job and no land they couldn't feed themselves. Food is going to be the most precious commodity in the country. Our population is three times larger than it was in the great Depression. Imagine what it will be like when all the grocery stores close.
Consider your lifestyle. What can you do without in order to put money in the safe deposit box? Gym memberships are nice but you will need that money later. Cable television extras, pest control, alarm systems and the like should be cancelled as soon as possible. You are gong to need that money for food.
Your electric bill can be cut and should be. Save every penny you can by reducing the lighting, the heating and the air. It may be environmentally nice to do this but right now the environment isn't the issue. Eating is the issue.
September 2008 is going to go down in history as the month the world went backwards. Articles have been published about survival in the new order. Experts are saying buy guns and ammo because what you have is going to be taken from you. If history is a teacher, we know that in the Great Depression there was violence. With our population as large as it is the shortages we will face will make 1929 look like the good old days.
What should you do?
1. Save your money.
2. Reduce your expenses.
3. Plan how you can feed your family.
4. Change your occupation.
5. Learn everything you can about growing food YEAR ROUND.
6. Learn all you can about emergency first aid.
7. Purchase in quantity medicines you will need.
8. Create in your home a secret secure place for food and medicines.
9. Purchase tools you will need for gardening and building a shelter.
10. Locate a campsite in a state or national forest suitable for living. Make sure it has a water supply.
