North Coast Americans Brace for Impact?

Hurricane Earl has many people worried these days. It seems as though this major storm may hit the Northern East Coast of the United States. Will it hit New York City, New Jersey, or Long Island?

There are many people that have been in a hurricane's path and know exactly what to do and what to expect. However, the projected path as determined by the Weather Channel has many folks in New York and New Jersey worried about a storm they may not be prepared for.

When there is a limited time to prepare for such a storm, some of the tricks that the seasoned hurricane survivors have up their sleeves may no longer be feasible for those that may be affected this storm. Plywood on windows, homes on stilts, and know-how are a few examples of the tools that these folks lack.

But it is not too late to prepare for an emergency. Here are five must have items for any household preparing for a hurricane:

The first item that every person must have available to them is water. Have plenty available. Each person should have at least one gallon per day for three to seven days, according to the National Hurricane Center. Remember to have three to seven days of non perishable foods at your disposal as well. If you have canned foods, do not forget a can opener. Have some paper plates and utensils as well. This will ensure that your family will remain nourished and hydrated should an emergency occur.

Secondly, be sure to have some blankets, pillows, and clothing available as well. Add some rain gear to this supply list so you will not get completely wet when outside. Hurricanes are wet, but you do not have to be! Pack these items in waterproof, or at the very least, plastic containers. Add a pair of sturdy shoes for each member of the family to complete this portion of the kit.

The third items are all of the family's important documents are with you and in a waterproof container. Social Security Cards, Birth Certificates, Insurance Policies, Medical Records, and Bank Account information are all items that must be with you and protected from the elements. You can even pack pictures or a few scrapbooks if you so wish.

The fourth item will be a few miscellaneous things to have ready ahead of time. Have all of the fluids topped off in your vehicle. Keep a set of tools with you for any needs you may have. Of course, batteries, flashlights, and a battery operated radio are all must haves when dealing with a possible hurricane. If you have children, have some books, toys, games, and stuffed animals ready for them. Remember your pets. Have all of the necessary items for them as well. Food, water, dishes, and leashes should be included in your kit, along with some plastic bags for their waste.

Lastly, remember all of your medication and any that the other members of your family need. Keep them in a waterproof container away from the food. In this package you should also pack toiletries, wipes, items for babies and the elderly, feminine hygiene products, and a first aid kit.

With this list of items, you should be well prepared for a hurricane should it affect your area. Remember to stay safe and evacuate immediately if told to do so. It is not only safe for you, but for those that would have to rescue you after disaster strikes.

  • Don't forget a non electric can opener for all canned foods.
  • Remember your pets and all of their supplies.
  • Hurricanes can hit New York, New Jersey, and above.
There are different accounts of the last hurricane to hit New York City. Some say that last one was in the late 1800's, while others say it was as recent as the 1930's. Is it time for another?
