If you're a member of the survival and preparedness community, no doubt you are fully aware of the coming zombie apocalypse and have prepared for it. If not, you are lacking critical information that the government has now acknowledged and addressed.
The Centers of Disease Control (CDC) says we should prepare now for the coming zombie apocalypse. With tongue firmly placed in cheek, they tell us that "when it happens you'll be happy you read this, and hey, maybe you'll even learn a thing or two about how to prepare for a real emergency."¹
After presenting a brief history of zombies, the CDC gets into the meat - dead or not - of the matter. The first thing they tell us to have on hand is a fully stocked emergency kit that includes food, water, first aid supplies, and medications. Other items they suggest necessary to survive the coming zombie apocalypse are tools, sanitation supplies, clothing, bedding, and important documents.
Tools and supplies for your zombie apocalypse (disaster) preparation kit should include a knife (utility or fixed blade), duct tape (repairs anything, many uses), battery powered radio (to learn where the zombies are), and fuel for cooking. Leave eating raw meat to the zombies.
Sanitation and hygiene are particularly important, because the zombies (or a natural disaster) may have contaminated the local water supply, and flushing toilets may not be an option due to water shortages. Diseases such as cholera and dysentery can spread quickly through a zombie-free refugee camp (or evacuation shelter), so clean living conditions are paramount.
Clothing may seem like a no-brainer, but often people find themselves unprepared for conditions they aren't used to from being in a house and out of the weather. In fact, hypothermia is one of the greatest killers of people affected by other known zombie apocalypses (or natural disasters). Consider what clothing you will need for the weather conditions, both night and day.
Bedding can take the form of sheets and multiple blankets or simply a good all-weather sleeping bag. Included in this category is some kind of personal shelter if you cannot get to an evacuation shelter. Personal shelter can be in the form of a tent if you are outdoors, or a makeshift shelter in your own home. In cold weather, creating a shelter in your house from couch cushions, mattresses, blankets, and so on can conserve on heat and energy, reducing the need for calories and guarding against hypothermia.
Important documents include your driver's license, birth certificate, passport, and so on. One can't be too careful when it comes to zombies and their tricks to get at living flesh, so zombie apocalypse evacuation shelters will require that you have documents for identification. Zombies won't have ID because their brains are so focused on eating living flesh that they can think of nothing else, much less carrying identification.
Seriously, the CDC offers more emergency preparedness tips and their take on
what to do in case of a zombie apocalypse is a scream. For a laugh and valuable tips, check it out.

Post a CommentI notice you advised us to not eat raw meat; that we should leave it for the zombies. Would eating a medium rare steak been safe? Wow, not only a fun article, but realistically, you included so many wise tips for any emergency. (But I’m in Minnesota—what if this had happened in the winter? :-)
I vant to suck your bloooooddddd.....LOL. Funny - but a little scary. Sandra, I LOVE your "zero" remark on my crosses article! Wish I'd thought of it!
OOOOOOOOOOH, I love it!
I'm skipping the zombie stuff. If that was a bad decision, I guess I'll know it.
Sandra, We were never prepared for what happened yesterday and I may not be around much the next few days....It feels like a "tornado" ripped thru our lives in NY. My disabled cousin (and friend) who we visit often, died suddenly of heart failure yesterday. I'm trying to help w/ her arrangements & her dogs. cheers
Great fun, thanks Sandra!
