~Cell Phone
You don't have to text your friends or browse the internet, but a cell phone may be the only way you can find help should an accident occur on icy or snowy roads. You should carry a fully charged cell phone with you any time you plan to travel during winter. There are cell phones available that only dial 911, with the only cost being the cost of the phone. You can also purchase cheap monthly plans with the bare basics for an emergency cell phone.
~Dress for the Weather
A big winter coat may not match your outfit, but should you find yourself on the side of the road in freezing temperatures, you may be glad to have a warm coat. Whether you wear the coat or not, take one with you. Style isn't worth your life.
You should also keep gloves, a scarf or ear muffs, and an old pair of tennis shoes in your car. The gloves and scarf will help protect you from the cold temperatures, while the shoes will make it easier to walk if you need to look for assistance. Warm winter boots are an even better shoe choice if possible.
~Jumper Cables
You should keep a pair of jumper cables in your car all year long. If you break down, you can flag down some good samaritan to help you jumpstart your car. You can also use your cell phone to call for a friend to come jump you off.
~AAA
A membership with AAA can guarantee someone will be there to help you if you break down during your winter travels. The cost of membership is nothing compared to the peace of mind you will have should something happen while driving.
~Be Aware of Weather Conditions
This should be a given, but stay off the road when winter weather makes driving dangerous. This will completely prevent the unexpected from occurring to begin with.
~Safety Kit
Create a winter driving safety kit for your car. This kit should include the following items:
-Food
-Water
-Flares
-Flashlight and batteries
-Blanket
-First Aid Kit
-Lighter or matches
You can survive the unexpected during winter travel by being prepared. Have a way to call for help and supplies to keep you warm and safe while you wait. Drive carefully during the winter season as roads can ice over quickly. Remember, caution may keep you from ever experiencing the unexpected.
