Preparedness Steps to Take in the Event of a Hurricane

Anyone who lives near the ocean knows that the reality of a hurricane striking them is a distinct possibility. And if you are currently one of these individuals then you probably have a plan in place in case a hurricane does strike your area. If you don't have a plan then you should make one. In this article, I will discuss some steps you can take in the event of a hurricane strike.

Prepare Your Home -

To prepare your home for a hurricane, you need to take some precautions. First off, you should cover the windows with wood or some other type of material. Or you can invest in some storm shutters, which will negate the need for you to shield the windows with wood. Another option is to simply buy some hurricane windows. These windows are stronger than normal windows and can take quite a beating.

You may also want to sandbag the area around your doors if you have the time. Sandbagging may help to reduce the amount of water that enters your home in the event of a hurricane strike. Unfortunately, sandbagging will not be very effective if the water is as high as your house. But it's better than nothing.

Emergency Supplies -

Obviously, you should have some emergency supplies tucked away in case of a hurricane. Some emergency supplies that you should have or buy in the event of a hurricane are a flashlight, weather radio, blankets, first aid kit, extra batteries, water, food; etc. More than likely, you will be fleeing the general vicinity of the hurricane.

But these emergency supplies will still come in handy when you're on the road. And if you decide to wait the hurricane out then these emergency supplies will be even more important. If you plan on waiting the hurricane out inside of your home then you may also want to invest in a power generator. I recommend you leave, though.

Find Safe Haven -

Like I said above, I really recommend that you leave if a hurricane is going to strike near your home. Hurricanes are unpredictable, and there's no telling how much damage they could inflict on your area. So find some safe haven. Perhaps, one of your friends or family members who live farther inland could let you stay with them for the short term.

Or better yet, you could have a second home somewhere farther inland. This would greatly ease your burdens, and it's something that I recommend to anyone who wants to live near the coast. It's just too risky to only own one home when you live near the ocean. Especially if the ocean that you live near produces a significant amount of hurricanes.

As you can see, preparing for a hurricane is something that is very important for those of you who are in hurricane sensitive areas. Be sure to load up on emergency supplies and flee if you're in the path of one of these hurricanes. Your house can be replaced, but your life cannot.
