Preparing to Adopt a Dog

Elena Newell
When you adopt a homeless dog you not only add a new member to your family, you also provide shelter to a dog that needs it. Adopting a dog is similar to adopting a child. As with a child there will be a period of transition during which the animal and the members of the family adjust to one another. Depending on the animal this transition period may be a bit tough and it may leave you drained sometimes. To reduce the transition period and to make it smoother you need to prepare to adopt a dog before bringing it home.

The first step is to decide from where you will be getting your dog. There are different types of animal shelters and they each have their advantages and disadvantages. For example in large organizations like the Humane Society or SPCA you will find a wide variety of dogs that you can adopt including abandoned pet dogs, dogs that were victims of abuse or dogs that had to leave their homes for any number of reasons. If you adopt an abandoned dog from your local dog pound you may even be able to save one from being euthanized.

Some dogs react violently to particular people and to rule out such a reaction to a particular member of your family it is best to visit the shelter with your family members and try out a few dogs you like by playing and taking them for a walk. Once you decide which dog you will adopt the next step is to familiarize yourself and other members of the family with the dog. This can be done by visiting the animal shelter and hanging out along with the dog a few times to build mutual trust. This process will make the transition very smooth.

Many people adopt a puppy and are later surprised to see that it has grown to a large dog that needs a much larger space whereas their homes are quite small. Therefore before deciding on which puppy to adopt you must also find out how big it will grow and whether it will be comfortable within your home space. You should find out from the animal shelter staff about the peculiar habits of the dog you are interested in. Find whether it has been spayed and neutered. Find out about the vaccinations the dog has had and what more needs to be done. Get the vaccination card for the dog to keep track of its vaccination schedule.

You will have to buy a few items that your new dog will need on arrival. Things like blankets, dog bed, rugs, leash, etc. You will also need some suitable dog food. Find out about the dogs feeding habits and start with that. You can later change its food gradually to match with your family's. You will need cleaning products, fabric deodorants and air cleaners. You will need a floor cleaner and stain remover to take care of any accidents inside the home. They are easily available in most pet supply stores.
