A role player is exactly as it sounds; any player who fills a specific role for a team. Examples of this type of player include defensive specialists, pinch-hitters, and pinch-runners. A role player has to have a tough mental make-up, as they will often be called upon in a pressure situation to perform. This is where training and practice make all the difference.
As a role player, you should make sure that you are constantly working on your area of expertise. This will give you the best opportunity to come through in the clutch for your team. It can often be hard sitting around for 7 or 8 innings and then have to spring into action, so you also have to be physically fit. Make sure that you follow a diet and training program that leaves you at your physical best.
It is also important for role players to stay involved in the game. A great way for a role player to keep his head in the game is to keep score or record stats. This may seem like a lesser job to some people, but in reality a role player should relish this duty. This gives him an opportunity to scout most all of the players on opposing teams, which can come in handy down the road. For example, if a role player is paying attention to the game and gets a good read on a certain pitcher; he can then file that information away if he has to face him in the future.
Lastly, it is crucial for a role player to set a positive example on the practice field and in the clubhouse. Always work hard and be a vocal leader, and that leadership will rub off on the entire team.
As you can see, the position of role player is very important to a team's success. Keep this in mind the next time you find yourself filling these very big shoes.
