Preparing Your Body for Pregnancy

Shelia West
When a woman becomes pregnant, she is sharing her body with her unborn child. She has choices as to what she eats, drinks, breathes, and puts into her body. Her baby does not. The baby is totally dependent upon the mother. So the choices a pregnant woman makes become the child's only option. That's a pretty big responsibility when you think about it. That cigarette might taste pretty good to you, but wonder what the baby thinks about it. Because he or she is smoking it, too. That's scary, isn't it? Just paint a picture in your mind of your newborn baby with a cigarette between his lips. Not a pretty picture, is it?

Every woman wants her child to be born healthy. If you ask any pregnant woman what she wants most concerning her baby, the answer will always be for it to be healthy. And every baby deserves the best chance possible to be born healthy. However, some women don't seem to realize that the choices they make concerning their body impacts a baby's health tremendously. And not just during the pregnancy, but before it also. In fact, the earlier a woman begins preparing her body for childbearing, the better the chances of having a healthy baby.

So what are some of the things a woman can do even before she becomes pregnant to help her baby have the safest and healthiest environment during its months in the womb? How long before becoming pregnant should a woman begin changing her lifestyle in preparation for pregnancy? These are questions every woman needs to know if she plans on becoming pregnant.

Truthfully, since many pregnancies are unplanned, the best time to begin preparing your body for pregnancy is now. There's no better time than the present. Every woman who is sexually active who has not gone through menopause should realize that she could accidentally become pregnant. The only foolproof method of birth control is abstinence. With that in mind, women should treat their bodies with respect and care. That's not saying that women can't have a beer or a glass of wine if they want. It doesn't mean a woman can't eat chocolate cake or pizza whenever she wants. It's the amount of these substances that a woman consumes that can make a difference to her future child.

Moderation is the key word. By limiting the amount of alcohol or food consumed, a woman can better control her body's health. By regulating her weight, using alcohol in moderation, and exercising regularly, she helps assure her baby of the best possible habitat while it is forming and getting ready for birth. By taking care of her own body, she is providing her future baby with a healthy environment when she does become pregnant. That is a gift every mother should bestow on her unborn child. Even if a woman doesn't plan on getting pregnant for several years, when the time does come, she will have her body conditioned and ready.

Smoking is one exception to the moderation rule. Smoking is bad, both for you and your future baby. Even in moderation, it is harmful. So if you smoke and plan on having a baby someday, stop now. The sooner you stop smoking, the better. You will need time to for your body to cleanse itself of the toxins from the cigarettes.

It goes without saying that if a woman is addicted to any other substances she should enter treatment and make sure her body is clean before a baby comes into the picture. Drug abuse is one of the worse things a mother can pass on to her child. And if a mother is addicted and uses drugs during pregnancy, more than likely the child will be born addicted to the same substance. After all, it's been getting its share of whatever the mother was using. Please don't let your baby begin life addicted to drugs.

Obviously, any woman who plans on becoming pregnant someday should keep her body as healthy as possible. The simplest way to do that is to just take care of it and respect it. Don't think of it as your body; think of it as the future temporary home of your baby.
