Preparing Children for a Summer Trip

Summer is a great time to take the kids on vacation. Most children are out of school, the weather is nice, and amusement parks and other attractions are open for longer hours. Vacations can take a lot of planning; it is important to try to involve your kids as much as you can in the preparation. If you take some time before the trip to get them involved in preparing for the trip, they are likely to enjoy it more. These ideas will help you prepare your child for taking a major summer trip.

Learn More about the Destination

If you are travelling to a far-off destination, your child might not know much about the location that you're going to. Point out some of the attractions that you will plan on seeing on your trip. You may even allow them to help you choose one of the attractions that you will visit; e.g. "would you like to visit Sea World or the Wild Animal Park?" You may want to visit web sites related to your destination, or even order brochures from the local chamber of commerce.

If you are visiting a historical area, you may want to use the trip as an opportunity to teach your child about the area. You may want to read a book set in the area to younger children. Older children could read an age-appropriate book about the area.

Have them Help Pack

Children can help pack their own items. Younger children will not be able to pack their own clothes, but they can still pick out a favorite toy to take. They might also be able to choose a favorite outfit to take along. Older children will be able to pack their own. Give them a list of things that you expect them to pack; be sure to check after they pack to make sure that they didn't forget anything.

Encourage them to Save for the Trip

More than likely, there will be plenty of things on vacation that kids will want to spend their money on. There will be souvenirs, treats, and other items that your kids may want to buy. Encourage them to save some of their money so that they can afford the things that they want. You may want to give them a vacation allowance as well, but encourage them to save their money in case they want to spend more than you are willing to give them. Although you will want to hold on to younger children's money, older children can carry their own wallets and manage their own money for the trip.

By taking a little time before traveling to get your child ready for vacation, they can have a more enjoyable time when they get there.
