Preparing and Cleaning Storm Windows in Good Weather is Much Easier on Me!
Getting Window Screens Out and Storm Windows in is Much Easier for Me in the Sunshine!
Preparing and cleaning storm windows for my home in good weather is much easier! I am not going to wait until it gets cold to do these! I will leave a few for the last minute since it may be warmer here and there and this way I can at least open a few windows with screens in them.
Once I have the storm window glass pieces all sorted and cleaned up it is time to make room for the screens that are coming out. Ideally the screens can go right back onto the same shelf where I had stored the storm windows!
If any of the storm window frames seem to need work I can remove them using the cordless power drill with a Phillips head screwdriver attachment and then take them to a flat work area where I can straighten them and maybe paint them if they need that.
Once I have the glass prepared and the frames cleaned and painted it is time to look for old mounting hardware. If it is stripped or missing then a quick trip to the hardware store and I will have all the screws I will need.
With the correct hardware in hand I will mount the storm window frames and get things sealed up properly using plastic and caulking to keep the heat in and the cold out! I will leave a few storm windows out just in case the weather stays warm and I want to open a few windows to get in some fresh air.
From inside the house I will go around with my digital thermometer and see where we may have air leaks. Fixing these while it is still warm outside and there is no rain wind or snow to contend with makes me very happy!
One of the biggest window changes is always the main front screen door. This one is full length and is stored in the basement. First I will wash the glass and then the screen outside on the grass and then after the glass is in and the screen has dried I will put it in the storage spot that I have used ever since we put in that new screen door.
Lastly I will begin the work required to close all the vent openings that get shut for fall and winter. These are usually the crawl space vents, attic vents and roof vents. The house is old and a little drafty so it will never be sealed up completely, but I can do this enough that it will not take a miracle to get her done before snow.
