Preparing to Be a First Time Parent of Twins

4 Tips to Alleviate Stress Overload

Stacy Hensley
Hearing the news that you are going to be a parent is overwhelming by itself. Preparing for the arrival of your first child is a beautiful experience, but often stressful as well. So when you later find out it's twins, that is definitely a shock! Your mind will be overflowing with questions, doubts, and fears. Eventually, the shock will wear off and the stressing will take over times two. So where do you start?

Start a List
Make a list of things you will need before the twins come home. Start with the basics and then add on as you think of new things. And trust me, you will think of loads of new things.

Now that you have your list, you can mark things off as you acquire them. This will not only help you stay organized, but you will also know what you have and what you still need. If you know you will be having a baby shower, be sure and have an updated list available for friends and family. This gives them an opportunity to purchase gifts from the list of items you still need.

Budget
With twins on the way budgeting is very important. Odds are you will find the same items for various prices at different stores. Shop around and find the lowest price. This is most helpful on more expensive items like cribs.

Do Not Procrastinate
Set things up as you receive them. This makes it much easier for you and keeps you from having to do everything at once. Invite friends over for a baby room party and let them help paint or assemble cribs. This gives you a chance to spend time with them and accomplish things at the same time. It will also give you more time to rest in your later trimesters.

Most importantly, take time to relax!
Give yourself a break from stress and read a good book or catch a movie with friends. There will always be something to worry about or stress over, even after the bundles of joy arrive. But there will not always be time to relax, so take advantage while you can.

Keep things simple and don't let worries get the best of you. Things will not magically be finished overnight. So just take things one at a time and you will be amazed at how easy things seem to fall into place.

These are good ideas, especially the one to take time to relax. My twins were born 25 years ago. I didn't find out I was expecting twins until two weeks before my due date. We barely had time to get over the shock and they were here - 10 days after we found out!

I can't even image having one child - let alone two! Nicely written and very informative. :)
