Preparing for Flight Cancellations: A Guide to Making a Back-Up Plan

Arthur Kirk
It is becoming clear that these airline-flight cancellations are not a short-term issue. It appears the flight cancellations by the airlines for failure to do safety checks will continue. If you are planning on flying in the upcoming months, it is best to prepare for delays and possible cancellations until the airlines get their acts together. American Airlines, Southwest and other airlines have had issues with not performing these safety checks. Here is what you should bring with you to prepare.

1. A List Of Local Hotels With Phone Numbers: Bring a list of hotels and phone numbers with you when traveling. Have a list for each airport you will be stopping at so you are prepared in case your flight is canceled. Do not count on having your laptop with you. Keep in mind many airports charge very large fees for Wi-Fi and even more if you have to wire in to an internet connection at the airport.

2. A List Of Restaurants Near Each Airport: If you are going to be stuck at the airport due to a cancellation of your flight for these airlines that fail to do safety checks, don't give them more money by eating at the airport. Come prepared with a list of restaurants that are within a short cab ride from the airport. Yes the cab ride might cost you a few extra dollars, but at least you won't be giving the airport additional business after your flight was canceled. Check out Restaurant.com for discount coupons for these restaurants as well, and keep the list with you. Keep in mind to use Restaurant.com you will have to have access to a computer at the airport to order your discounted coupon.

3. Spare Battery For Your Laptop: If you are using a laptop computer and plan to plug in at the airport you might find a lack of outlets to use during these flight delays. The cancellations will result in many people trying to plug their laptops in at the same time. To be prepared it is best to bring an extra battery with you.

4. Entertainment For Children: The delay due to a flight cancellation can be hardest on parents of young children. Make sure you bring something to entertain them for extended periods of time. Bring a favorite toy, book, game, or other item you know will hold their attention. Keep in mind that purchasing toys at the airport will cost you much more than most other locations.

5. A cell phone: Of course, this is almost standard procedure these days, but make sure you have a full battery charged on it. This will become handy as you are calling around to make arrangements if your flight is canceled or delayed.

Hopefully you will not be a victim of these flight cancellations by airlines due to their failure to conduct safety checks. If you are though, these tips should help you be prepared for them.

  • Being prepared for flight cancellations will help relieve some of the stress.
  • When you can, avoid eating at the airports as the food is usually low quality and overpriced.
  • Don't forget about your children, bring something to entertain them.
Nobody wants to be a victim of airline cancellations, but with the large number among different airlines it would be smart to prepare ahead for them.
