Preparing Garden Beds

It is always a good idea to have your garden beds prepared freshly and annually. Because the soil gets recharged with fresh manures, well aerated and helps in increase of water holding capabilities.

What are the methods to make your garden beds for annuals?
Tilt and dig the soil well and remove the weeds, small stones, pebbles and allow it to dry for few days. Dig at least one foot deep in the soil and spread it so that any white ants and ants present in the soil will be destroyed.

After few days press the soil lumps with hands and make it loose, remove any plastic or any waste matter in the soil. Then spread the loose soil evenly add a little germicide to dug and spread soil so that no white ants will attack the garden bed.

Organic manure are the best suited for your home garden. These organic manures will be rich in humus, dead and dry leaves. Leafy manures makes the soil to get rich texture, makes the soil porous, light and helps the soil loose so that the roots can penetrate the soil easily for better growth of the plants.

What will be the proportion or ratio for mixing the manures?
Once the soil is ready add fresh dry leafy manure, cow dung, poultry excreta, some sand in one is to three ratios with equal amount of dry soil. Add little amount of Urea and potash in the freshly prepared garden bed and make it even with hands and tilter.

One thing more you have to remember that the cow dung and the poultry excreta should be dry made soft without lumps. Extra care should be taken to see that the organic manure is free from any white ants.

Why sand?
Sand should be added in little proportion to keep the extra water to absorb quickly.

Earth Worm
Add some earth worms in the freshly prepared garden bed. Earth worm are called natural plough man and help in many ways. They loosen the soil, helps in aeration of soil; they give fertilizer by the way of its excreta. They also help in increase water holding capacity.

So by now your garden beds are ready for plantation and you just have to raise the boundary of the beds to keep the water in the bed and not wasted. You can also add bricks as the boundary.
