#1. Most preparation entails knowing what is going to happen and how. So the more the father and mother understand the birth process the better off everyone will be.
#2. Write down any and all emergency numbers. Do not have them all on your cell phone or computer. Even have several copies.
#3. Make a Birth Kit, containing all the supplies that you might need. You can find this information online. I have seen places where you can buy the kits also. Familiarize your self with the contents.
#4. Create a comfortable space for the mother to give birth.
#5. Have appropriate water proof sheets, chucks etc. so as not to soil your bed. If this is where you plan on having the baby.
#6. If you have children already and do not want them to be part of the event, have several people on your list written down you can contact to come and pick up the children.
#7. Educate the kids about the whole process so they are not so stressed out. Childbirth is a natural occurrence try to remind everyone, that women used to have babies with out doctors all the time.
#8. If you have relatives or neighbors that will only ad to the stress of an unusual situation contact them when it all over.
#9. Learn CPR, it seems the more preparation you have the less chance of having to actually executing CPR.
#10. Practice doing a Emergency home birth and remember again giving birth is a natural process.
As I stated in the beginning the mother and baby come first , well in any situation not just emergency home birthing. Do what ever it takes to make the mother at ease with the whole situation. Usually this means that the partner must get the confidence of the mother. This can normally be done by knowing what is going on during the birthing process. Getting educated about the whole process by reading books, watching videos and studying will go far.
The more you can make the mother feel at ease and the more you are prepared mentally for the event the better it will go for the mother and baby. I witnessed many fathers that were more concerned with themselves during routine births than being concerned with the mother. While the partners feelings are taken into consideration, it really is a time to pay attention to the mother and the baby and forget about your needs and wants.
If you can just have a bit of empathy for the mother and baby and be prepared and confidant that you can help her, you will be able to get both of them through the situation. Having delivered both of my kids with the help of a mid-wife is a life changing experience you will never forget.
