Preparing for Hysterectomy

If you are going to have a hysterectomy, there are some things you need to do to prepare. In addition to details to discuss with your doctor, there are some things to get ready at home when preparing for a hysterectomy.

Things to discuss with your doctor when preparing for hysterectomy. It is important to know if you will have a partial or complete hysterectomy, such as if your ovaries will remain. Also, you should be aware of the type of surgery, whether LAVH (laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy) or if a cut will be made in your abdomen. Healing and aftercare are different for each type. Be sure to know the risks involved with the surgery, including the use of anesthesia.

Preparing physically for your hysterectomy. You want to be sure to take care of your health prior to any surgical procedure. Eat healthy, get plenty of sleep and maintain any exercise program you may be involved in. If you smoke, this might be a good time to quit as smoking can interfere with healing after your hysterectomy.

Preparing emotionally for a hysterectomy. Know how you feel about having a hysterectomy. If necessary, obtain counseling prior to your surgery to deal with the issue or have a few counseling sessions set up afterward. You can even find hysterectomy support groups online.

Preparing for your hospital stay. Your doctor will tell you approximately how long you will be staying in the hospital after your hysterectomy. Plan ahead for a couple extra days just in case any complications arise. I was scheduled to have an LAVH which had to be aborted and done through the abdomen due to complications.

Have things ready for your return home. After surgery, you will have limited activity which you should discuss with your doctor. If possible, make arrangements for someone to come in and help with kids, meals and cleaning duties for at least the first week. You can make meals in advance and freeze them to be reheated for dinners as needed. I know people who were able to resume normal activity fairly quickly after hysterectomy, however, my first week was very difficult.

Preparing for hysterectomy. These are just a few ideas of things you will want to consider prior to having a hysterectomy. Talk with your doctor about any special needs you may be facing before you have your surgery.
