It is always important to eat a proper diet, but this becomes even more important when trying to conceive and while you are pregnant. You will need to be sure you are eating foods with sufficient nutrients as well as vitamins and minerals. Your doctor may even set a diet for you. If you are underweight, you will need to gain weight before conceiving. If you are overweight, it is better to be at a healthy weight so your body will not be under a lot of extra strain throughout your pregnancy. Fresh foods will provide a lot of what you need.
For the vitamins that are harder to get in food, or you may not consume enough, there are prenatal vitamins. There are over the counter brands, but most doctors will write you a prescription for a suitable prenatal vitamin. Your vitamin will need to have all the vitamins your body and baby will need to sustain a healthy pregnancy, especially folic acid. Most over the counter brands will not have enough folic acid.
Before conceiving, it is a good idea for you and your partner to get preconception exams. Your doctor will check your ovaries, uterus, and sometimes hormone levels. He will also go over a plan of action to help you conceive. Be sure you find a doctor you are comfortable with and one that will listen to your questions and concerns. Your partner will also be checked. Most likely they will do a semen analysis to check the sperm count, as well as mobility and shape. He may also get a general physical exam to check his overall reproductive health. A lot of times, trying to conceive will take longer because couples fail to get the man checked. If his sperm count is low, there is a simple solution and you should be well on your way to conceiving your child.
No matter what your plans are, you should always be thinking in the best interest of you and your children. By following these steps before you get pregnant, you will save yourself some scary situations and be allowed to enjoy a quiet and exciting pregnancy.
