Preparing for Preschool: The Importance of an Active Imagination
Why Children Need to Let Their Imaginations Run Wild
When it comes to children, namely toddlers and preschoolers, you will find that most already have an active imagination. Most children this age can turn a simple blanket into a tent, a superhero cape, a house, or a picnic blanket right in the middle of the living room. Not only is it cute watching toddlers and preschoolers use their imaginations, you will find that there are a number of benefits to doing so as well.
Although many parents do not think about it, imagination can be used to foster learning. For instance, if your child does not like doing preschool workbooks at home, you can play school. You can start out as the teacher and have your child do a preschool worksheet and then you, the teacher, can grade the preschool worksheet, with a reward, like a sticker for a job well done. Once one worksheet has successfully been completed, the roles can reverse. You can have your child use their imagination to become the teacher and you can become the student, completing your own preschool worksheet.
An active imagination is often associated with creativity. Creativity, in turn, is also important to children, especially toddlers and preschoolers. In addition to using your child's imagination to assist with their learning and education, you can use it to help with their creativity. Preparing your child for preschool at home, as well doing a homeschool preschool program, as previously stated, is more then teaching them their colors or shapes.
In preschool and kindergarten, your child will complete a number of activities and craft projects. Starting these projects at home has a number of benefits. For instance, if your child is able to use their creativity and imagination to turn a simple paintbrush and piece of paper into a scene right out of a storybook, they may develop a love for art. This love of art could later become a career or a hobby for them.
Having an active imagination is also important to all toddlers and preschooler because an active imagination is what they are supposed to have. Don't we all wish that we could return to a time when one of the biggest decisions we would have to make for the day would be which chair we wanted to transform into a rocket ship?
