In elementary school, passing tests were a piece of cake! The content learned was very simple and to the point. There were no performance tasks or deep thought required. But in middle and high school, students are expected to learn things on their own and read on by themselves in order to actually get 100% though the teacher is only teaching 80%. In order to gather the extra 20% of knowledge, students should properly prepare a home study area equipped with many tools.
First of all, the student should create a workspace in an area absent of a television or phone. A computer may be needed, but should be only used for purposes to help study. Tools at the workstation should include -but are not limited to- calculators, rulers, pencils, pens, highlighters, note cards, notebook paper, and art supplies if necessary. By allowing all materials to be gathered ahead of time, students get less distracted and can remain working. Snacks should also be avoided during this time. A light meal or snack should be consumed before studying so that hunger does not bother thinking.
It may also be ideal to have a whiteboard in the study space. When the student can visually check-off tasks once they are complete, they are sure not to forget to cover any topics.
Now that you know what tools you need to study, it's time to grab your books and start studying! Simply looking over all materials covered and class, plus 20% more daily will ensure your success. It only takes about 45 minutes and the reward is far greater than the sacrifice.
