Flip Chart Book: Circle Time
From the first day of school, I use the 100th Day Flip Chart by Maria Fleming. This flip chart is perfect for group activities, class starters, and circle time. The book has a different flip chart activity for each day leading up to and including the 100th day. Some of the activities are a bit complex for pre k students, but a great teacher can adapt the daily five minute lessons for her class by making some simple modifications.
Favorite Songs
Usually, there are 2 songs that we sang. The first is to the tune of The Ants Go Marching One by One. My students sang two verses, and the words are:" Verse 1: We've all been counting one-by-one Hurrah! Hurrah! We've all been counting, oh what fun Hurray! Hurrah! We've all been counting one-by -one, And now 100 days are done, Hooray! Today's the 100th day of school! Verse 2: We started counting up to 10 Hoorah! Hoorah! To 20, 30, 40 then, Hoorah! Hoorah! To 50, 60, 70 then, To 80 ,90, now is when Hooray! Today's the 100th day of school . " The second song that we sing is 100 Bottles of Beer on the Wall and of course we change the words, singing instead," 100 days of school are gone, 100 days of school,1 is down, time goes on, 99 days of school to go on. " If the class is working on counting backwards that year, we sing backwards for about ten numbers. The children love this song. The next step in your 100th day activities is reading.
Favorite Books
Any lesson plan is not complete without a couple of great books. 100 Days of Cool by Stuart J Murphy is one such great book. In the book, Mrs. Lopez, the student's teacher, tells the kids on the first day of school, that they will be celebrating the 100 Days of School. The students thought she said 100 Days of Cool, plan a cool thing to do for each of the 100 days leading up to the 100th Day of School. Another great book to read is 100th Day Worries by Marjorie Cuyler. The book is about a student, Jessica, who becomes worried when her teacher tells the class it is the 95th day of school, and they have five days to think of what to bring on the 100th day. She wants the students to bring 100 of something. Jessica is a worry wart, and can't figure out what to bring. Both of these books are perfect for your classes 100th Day of School celebration.
100th Day Art Activities
My class makes invitations. The week before our 100th day activities, I create invitations and run them off of the Printshop Computer program. The students can then use crayons to color, glitter, and whatever else they want to glue on the invitation. The next day, after the invitations dry, they students take them home to their parents, inviting them to the 100th Day Celebration .
100th Day Show and Tell
Just like in 100th Day Worries, I have my students bring in 100 of something. I explain it can't be any thing messy, such as marsh mellows that will melt before getting to school. I send a note home explaining we are having a show and tell, and if parents could help their student pick out 100 of something. I had one parent find a bag of M and M's that had 100 pieces in it. I explain the simpler the better.
100th Day Party Snacks
Once I had a creative parent create a cake of 100. She stated she made it by hand, but I'm not sure how. A simpler idea is to have a parent bring check mix, and divide the mix into separate baggies. We always tell the students it is a 100th day check mix. So far, no one has stopped to count. I always check to make sure the mix is nut free though, as some students are allergic to nuts.
Maybe some of these ideas will help make your Pre Kindergarten's 100th Day of School activities a hit. With a little planning, great lesson plans, and cooperative parents, the day can be a success and the student will have fun learning.
