Preschool and Homeschool Bear Lesson Plan

Preschool students love learning about bears. This bear themed lesson plan is geared towards preschool aged children and can be used for individuals, small groups, homeschool settings, and in an entire class.

Bear Literacy

Teddy Bear Show and Tell Have each student bring their teddy bear to class. Let them introduce their bears and tell the class what they like to do together. (Bring extra bears for students who forget)

Bear Books Make a book by folding together 3-4 pieces of paper. Title the book "(Child's Name) Bear Book." On the inside, let each child glue a scene from a magazine on each page. Provide a bear sticker for each page. The child can put the sticker anywhere he or she wants on the scene. Let the child "read" the book to an adult and the adult can write the words for the story on each page.

Bear Songs and Rhymes Preschool aged students learn a lot of language from songs and rhymes: vocabulary, rhyming, sentence patterns, and more. These traditional bear songs and rhymes are perfect for preschool aged students:

Bear Math and Science

Hibernation Day Teach students the word hibernation and how bears hibernate all winter. Give students the option of wearing their pajamas to school and set up "caves" by covering tables with pillows. You can also teach about the diet of bears and give students a snack of berries and goldfish crackers to eat before they "hibernate."

Bear Matching Cut out pictures of adult and cub polar bears, black bears, and grizzly bears. You can find pictures online, or copy them out of books. Have students match the cubs to their mothers.

Bear Comparisons Bring in several teddy bears and have students rank the bears from biggest to smallest, softest to least soft, roundest to skinniest, and so on.

Bear Arts and Crafts

Coffee Covered Bear Let student paint a picture of a bear and sprinkle it with coffee grounds before the paint dries. The coffee will create a "fuzzy" looking texture on the bear.

Polar Bear Cookies Cut bear shapes out of a batch of cookie dough and bake and cool. When cool, let student cover the cookies with white icing and sprinkle on coconut flakes or white sprinkles.

Lacing Bear Cut a bear shape out of cardstock for each child and punch holes around the edge in ½ to 1 inch intervals. Tape a long piece of yarn to the back of the heart and tape the loose end of yarn to make a "needle." Show students how to lace around the edges of their bear. When finished, tape the loose end to the back and add a google eye to the front of the bear.
