Snacks for Preschool Lesson Plan: Mittens and Gloves

Sugar cookies: Let your preschool students help you roll out sugar cookie dough and then cut it with mitten and glove shaped cookie cutters. (A hand shape will do for a glove cookie cutter.) Let them decorate the mitten and glove cookies with icing that you have tinted with red food coloring. Yum!

Fine Motor Activity for Preschool Lesson Plan: Mittens and Gloves

Tracing and cutting: Set out sheets of white construction paper and pencils. Instruct your preschool students to trace one of their hands with the fingers next to each other and the thumb out as though the hand were in a mitten. Next, have them trace one of their hands with the fingers spread, as though wearing a glove. When completed, let them cut the "mitten" and "glove" out with safety scissors. Keep these for the art activity listed below.

Gross Motor Activity for Preschool Lesson Plan: Mittens and Gloves

Let your preschool students romp outdoors, paying attention to use their mittened and gloved hands to throw balls (rubber or snow), swing and if they are lucky enough to have plenty of snow, build a snow man.

If there is no snow or the weather is too warm for mittens and gloves, lead your preschool students in a pantomime. Pretend to put on mittens or gloves. Then pretend to throw snowballs and build snowmen.

Art Center Activity for Preschool Lesson Plan: Mittens and Gloves

Mitten and glove art: Using the mitten and glove shapes that your preschool students cut out during the previous fine motor activity, have them paint the shapes with water color paints. If you like, set out sequins, glitter and glue for your students to embellish the painted mittens and gloves.

Pre-math Center Activity for Preschool Lesson Plan: Mittens and Gloves

Set out the letters m-i-t-t-e-n and g-l-o-v-e that you have previously cut from felt or laminated construction paper. Put out an example of the words mitten and glove for your students to use as a guide. Have them set out the letters, properly spelling the words mitten and glove. Instruct your preschool students to count the number of letters in the word mitten and the number of letters in the word glove. Now have your preschool students count out 6 mitten shapes to set beneath the 6 lettered word and 5 glove shapes to set beneath the 5 letter word.

Pre-writing Center Activities for Preschool Lesson Plan: Mittens and Gloves

For younger students, provide sheets of paper with the letters M and G lightly printed on them. Have the children trace the letters. Do the same with the number you have chosen to focus on during this mittens and gloves theme..

For older students, provide an example of the letters M and G and the number you have chosen to focus on during this mittens and gloves theme. Have the students practice writing the letters and number freehand.

Write the words mitten and glove on your preschool classroom's white erase board. Let your students copy the words mitten and glove on the white board with red dry erase markers.
