Triangles: Ideas for Preschool Lesson Plans on Shapes

Susan Sonnen
Here are some fun activities and crafts for you to incorporate into your triangles lesson plan.

- pie slices
- sugar cookies cut with triangle cookie cutters

Art Center Activities for Preschool Lesson Plan: Triangle

Triangle specs: Let your students trace two triangles on card stock from templates cut from poster board. Have them cut out the triangles. You cut a smaller triangle in the center of each of those triangles. Glue or staple the triangles next to each other. Tape a straw to the side of one of the triangles. Now your students have triangle spectacles to hold up to their eyes and look through!

Triangular collage: Have your preschool students cut out a large triangle from a sheet of construction paper. Now have them cut triangles from old magazine pages, fabric scraps and construction paper. Instruct your students to glue the small triangles on the large triangle.

Triangle mobile: Have your preschool students cut triangles of different sizes and colors from construction paper. Let them glue small triangles in the center of large triangles to make them even more eye catching. Using a hole punch, put holes at the top of each triangle. Let your students lace colorful yarn through the holes and then tie the triangles to plastic coat hangers.

Song/Finger Play for Preschool Lesson Plan: Triangle

Here is an original children's song for your square theme. I release it into the public domain, so use it freely. It is sung to the tune of Ten Little Indians.

Little Triangles

One little, two little, three little triangles,

Four little, five little, six little triangle,

Seven little, eight little, nine little triangles,

Ten little triangles with three sides! (draw a triangle in the air with your forefinger)

Other Activities for Preschool Lesson Plan: Triangle

Music: Let your students play the triangle during music time. Have them point to the three sides of the triangle, counting them as they point.

Gross motor: Make a bean bag toss game for your preschoolers by cutting out a large triangle from cardboard. Cut out another triangle within that triangle. Now let your preschool students try to toss bean bags through the hole.

Musical triangles: Play musical chairs with your students, only using colorful triangles cut from construction paper that you have taped to the floor.
