A new study by a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has shown that prayer offers support for victims of violent relationships. The study, comprised of 62 in-depth interviews, revealed how prayer and faith interact with the provision of mental health services. By combining spiritual and psychological recovery, those who prayed regularly while in therapy found greater levels of comfort.
By providing a setting where victims did not have to fear retribution from an abusive partner, patients positively vented anger and expressed their real emotions. Sharp, the lead researcher, remarked that victims began to see themselves in a positive light, as God would see them. This countered the negative images that the victim's abusers had created. As a result of prayer, individuals raised their levels of self worth and self esteem.
Additionally, prayer reduced anxiety on a physical level. The act of bowing one's head and folding hands while remaining still reduced feelings of anxiety and anxiousness. Through concentration and meditation, victims emerged with new insight into themselves and their relationships.
The positive impact of prayer is not limited to those who have been abused. We can all recover and rejuvenate in our daily lives from the potent power of prayer. Faith can be wielded in many ways, even if the results are unintended. Why not intentionally use faith and prayer to positively impact your life today?
