Preserving Family Heirlooms

What to Do when You Inherit Something

R
People who pass away usually have family members they leave items of value to. These items could have monetary value, but they could also just have sentimental value - like a wedding dress, pictures, or something that came from a prized family vacation. If you've been given any of these things when you've lost a loved one, you might have been at a loss as to what to do with them.

If you want to keep them in the family, either to display them or to hold onto them for a future generation and pass them down again, there are many ways to preserve them. A lot of people just wrap them up carefully and put them in a box in the basement, attic, or closet. That might keep them from getting destroyed, but it won't necessarily keep them from the damage of age and time.

Lace will yellow, pictures will fade, and items that are wrapped in newspaper can take on a hint of print. It's best to avoid those kinds of things if you really want your items to stay looking new - or at least looking good. With that in mind, take your items to someone who specializes in preservation so that they won't be destroyed as they get older.

The loved one who passed them down to you certainly didn't want them to be damaged or destroyed, and if they were precious items that were involved with a lot of great memories, you probably want to pass them on to your children or to younger relatives if you don't have kids of your own.

Don't put them in a box in the heat of your attic or the dampness of your basement. Take them to a company that preserves all kinds of heirloom options or one that preserves your particular kind of item, and let that company seal the item up properly. Often this can be done in a display box so you can still look at the item and enjoy the memories it evokes for a very long time.

If you've had your heirlooms just packed up, it's not too late to get them to a preservation specialist. Many of these people can also restore damaged items, and if they cannot, they'll know who to refer you to. That's a great thing to know for any heirlooms that you have right now and for any that you might inherit in the future.

Good information. Our family passes things down from generation to generation and some of them aren't looking too happy lately.
