President Bush Calling for Military Buildup?

Daniel Rein
At the start of the month of December in 2006, President Bush called for a military buildup of the armed forces. The press picked up the story for about a day until it dropped into the back pages of the newspapers and was forgotten. Why, I ask, is such an announcement reaching deaf ears? Has our country lost total awareness of this ongoing war that has killed 3,000 American soldiers and counting?

President Bush called for almost 1 billion dollars in additional funds to fight the war in Iraq. Why, I ask, is this war continuing? Doesn't anyone, with the exception of hardcore leftists, stand against the war? The major problem that I am seeing is that politicians are afraid to call out the president or stand toe to toe with President Bush for fear of being called un-American.

I wouldn't go so far as to call the Iraqi war the same as the Vietnam War but it feel a little bit like it. Face it American people, the United States cannot and will not win this war. It is a guerrilla war, much like Vietnam where the U.S. cannot see and distinguish their enemy. Much like the war in Afghanistan which is still going on for those of you who haven't noticed, it cannot be won. In Afghanistan Osama Bin Laden was never fought and I'm pretty sure he is still alive today. Other terrorists are still alive and in Iraq, the leaders of the rebel resistance against the United States still are at large in a country that hates the United States.

The U.S. is losing the battle for international support as the U.S. is all alone in Iraq with no help and no safety net. An increase in troops will only lead to more soldiers getting killed. The most shocking thing that I have found in the news reporting is that some of the soldiers lack the best gear available to help them fight in the war like heavily armored trucks and tanks.

As the war drags on, support in Iraq for the U.S. troops has been dwindling. What has been angering as a member of the Democratic Party is that very few Democratic politicians are willing to publicly say that U.S. troops should be withdrawn from Iraq immediately. In fact, Senator McCain from Arizona who is a member of the Republican Party is a huge supporter of President Bushy and favors even more troops being sent in to fight. McCain is a likely candidate to run for president and I hope that he doesn't win because the U.S. needs to get out of Iraq as quickly as possible and reshape its international image. I am pretty sure that even when President Bush's term as president expires, we will still have troops stationed in Iraq and soldiers will continue to die needlessly until Congress stands up and finally does something or the next president of the United States pulls the troops out of Iraq.

With U.S. troops still stationed in Afghanistan and the U.S. military spread very thin throughout the world, the situation looks bleak for America's future
