President Bush: I Thank You

An Open Letter to President Bush

President Bush: Thank You

To President Bush, I thank you. I am not a scholar; I am a mother. I am not a politician; I am a citizen. Though many around me debate how President Bush has led our country over the past two terms, I can only say, "President Bush, thank you." Though many continue to argue your successes and failures, policy mistakes, and speech slip-ups, I can only say one thing, "President Bush, thank you."

You see, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I want to put aside the politics, congressional agendas, and political twists, turns, and spins. I only want to say one thing, and that is that I remember 9/11. I will always remember that fateful day when the entire world stood still, frozen in the ashes that spread across the nation as our worst fears were realized. Terrorists had attacked us and panic was rampant throughout the land.

More than that, I remember 9/12. I remember how the nation was glued to their television screens trying to make sense of what happened. I remember the following weeks that ensued, and how depression, fear, and anxiety began creeping across the land. Mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers trying to make sense of an act so brutal that there was no reason to be found.

I remember when the announcement was made that Bin Laden led the terrorist plot and that our nation had been targeted, and we as a country, for the first time in my life began to look at the words, "united" in new meaning. President Bush, we were afraid. We were scared. We were petrified. Many of us feared to go the malls, feared that there would be no future for our children. You see, I remember what it was like, when the country was afraid that anthrax was going to show up in mailboxes, and how the post office began to take unusually long delays in delivering people's mail. I remember the talk of needing to beef up security, to change policy, to implement new programs to keep our country safe. President Bush, I thank you.

I do not look at your presidency for any of your accomplishments or failures except for one thing and one thing alone. You see, today I woke up, I checked on my two young children who were asleep safe in their beds. There were no bombs, no terrorist strike, and no sounds of militant feet marching outside my door. There is no anthrax or chemical poison that I am breathing in. Today, my family and I went to the beach. I stared across the Gulf of Mexico and watched seagulls and sandpipers leave impressionable footprints in the sand. This is my country. This is my nation. This is my American dream and the dream continues for my children.

It has been seven years since the attack, and I know that you are doing something right. I woke up today and saw the American flag waving proudly downtown, in my country, in my nation. There has been no other attack, and for that, President Bush, I will always be sincerely grateful.

Thank you George Bush. Thank you for being a person first and a politician second. Thank you for ignoring the popularity of easy decisions. Thank you for your service.

You are also probably so over this article by now, right? Sorry to be a latecomer.

I also think we haven't had an attack because its easier to kill Americans when they come to you.

I don't think Bush did anything special in the wake of 9/11. He did what any competant politician would have done in the wake of an attack on our country. He just happened to be the shmo in charge when it happened. The rest of his presidency has been the mess of a self-righteous undereducated rich kid who believes in his own divine right to rule. He acts without proper information or understanding and views introspection as a sign of moral weakness instead of downright prudence. I think the president is probably not a bad person but rather the most dramatically underqualified chief executive in American history. He probably should have been a junior highschool gym teacher. And I grew up just across the river from Manhattan. I could smell 9/11 from my back yard. I do, Charisse, respect your right and conviction in voicing an exceedingly unpopular decision, however.

    Coach Fran,
Obviously she doesn't want to address the current issues because THAT ISN'T WHAT THE ARTICLE IS ABOUT! Read the second paragraph...and get a profile for God's sake and man up, don't be a coward and hide behind your mystery profile. Geez, what is it with you people...are you all from outer space?

  • Mary E Tilley3/30/2008

Biscuits the dog...go fetch the truth...you don't know what you're talking about...as usual another mystery profiler bites the dust!

  • Mary E Tilley3/30/2008

    Charisse,
it is obvious that these people don't know how to read and apparently they can't get thier profiles together either because when one goes to click on it, there isn't one available to comment privately. Bunch of stinking cowards is what I say. Sksg, has his/her pants in a bunch. Obviouisly, you struck a nerve and as such these people must believe what you are saying or they wouldn't be so darned upset about it. AGAIN..PEOPLE...read her second paragraph and get a clue!

  • Mary E Tilley3/30/2008

    sksg,
are you a coward? Where is your profile? If you're going to talk the talk then walk the walk...show us your face little one.
