President Bush Vetoes Bill: Will Meet with Congressional Leaders

President Bush is sticking to his guns. On Tuesday, Bush chose to veto a bill that would have all of our troops in Iraq after six months.

President Bush said, "Our troops and their families deserve better, and their elected leaders can do better. Whatever our differences, surely we can agree that our troops are worthy of this funding and that we have a responsibility to get it to them without further delay."The 124 billion dollar Democrat sponsored bill comes exactly four years after Bush's claim of "Mission Accomplished" on the USS Abraham Lincoln. The power struggle between President Bush and Congress will continue on Wednesday at 2:25 PM when Bush meets with leaders from both major political parties.

Democrats have a lot of unkind words for President Bush. Senate Majority Leader from Nevada, Henry Reid, said, "As we know the president has put our troops in the middle of a civil war. The reality on the ground proves what we all know; a change of course is needed." Nancy Pelosi said "The president wants a blank check. The Congress is not going to give it to him." She went on to say that "there is great distance" between herself and the Democrat controlled Congress. The Democrats have to live with this veto for the time being because they do not have enough votes to override the veto.

The Democrats denied they passed this bill on May 1st just because it was the four year anniversary of the failed "Mission Accomplished" photo op. While it may be a pure coincidence, Democrats are still using this as ammunition in their speeches. Bob Menedez, Democratic Senator from New Jersey, said, "I can think of no greater act of hubris, arrogance and denial than the declaration of 'mission accomplished' in Iraq four years ago."

Bush responded with a national broadcast of his response from the White House. "This is a prescription for chaos and confusion and we must not impose it on our troops." He went on to say that " it makes no sense to tell the enemy when you plan to start withdrawing" and the bill would only "mandate a rigid and artificial deadline" for the withdrawal of troops.
