President Obama Election is Top Story of the Decade - but Only in Illinois

Chicago Tribune Article Title on President Obama Story is Misleading

President Obama election has been voted the top story of the decade. Well, it's actually the top story of the decade in Illinois. President Obama election is not the top story for the world, nor is it the top story for the United States. No, the President Obama election was actually voted the top story of the decade just for Illinois. This was voted as a top story by the Associated Press.

Now the headlines are reading "President Obama election voted top story of the decade". This headline is extremely misleading. The real story is all about the top ten stories out of the state of Illinois over the last decade. And the election of President Obama certainly does top that specific list.

As the decade began back in 2000, Illinois State Senator Barack Obama was serving in the Illinois Senate since 1996. Just four years later in 2004, Obama had the title of US Senator as he won the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate. In the same year, he delivered the impressive keynote speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention that won him national and world attention.

According to The Chicago Tribune , the 2008 Obama Presidential victory over rival Sen. John McCain "repudiates an unpopular incumbent and an ongoing war, shifts national leadership to a new generation and provides dramatic proof to the world of the American ideal of opportunity for all". On November 4th, 2008 President-Elect Obama spoke in front of an audience of over 100,000 supporters in Grant Park to give his acceptance speech for the Presidency. America now had elected its first African-American President and history had been made.

No story list from Illinois would be complete if it didn't also include the exiled former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich. In December of 2008 news was released that Governor Rod Blagojevich was to brought up on federal corruption charges for conspiring to sell Obama's U.S. Senate seat in a to the highest bidder.

Within a month of the announcement of the allegations, Blagojevich was almost unanimously impeached from his office. Blagojevich's impeachment was the first to ever occur in the state of Illinois. Ex-Governor Rod Blagojevich, who is stilling awaiting his trial, has maintained his innocence and has promised that he will fight the charges to the end.

These two stories, President Barack Obama and Rod Blagojevich certainly do top the list from the state of Illinois for the last decade. But as titles for the stories are selected, the writers should be a bit more selective of the wording to more accurately reflect the content and not give the wrong impression to readers.
