President Obama to Give His First State of the Union Address Wednesday Night

Health Care Reform, Airline Security and the Economy Are Big Issues

President Obama will be giving his first State of the Union Address Wednesday night, January 27 at 9 p.m. Eastern Time, according to Wikipedia. This State of the Union Address by President Obama is going to be watched with lots of interest because of the crossroads America is in right now. I predict at least three major themes will be covered by President Obama during his State of the Union Address. These themes include health-care reform, airline security and the economy.

President Obama to Give State of the Union Address: Health Care Reform, Airline Security and the Economy Are 3 Big Issues

Now that the supermajority of the U.S. Senate has been squandered away by Democrats since they lost Ted Kennedy's old senate seat, getting health-care reform passed with a massive bill full isn't expected to happen. President Obama needs to address this issue because he has yet to see anything of major consequence happen over this vital issue, his pet issue. What is he going to call for getting passed this year with the Democrats still in control of Congress as the mid-term elections loom? I predict a little reform here, a little reform there, instead of the whole ball of wax, so to speak.

As for airline security, President Obama would be wise to again focus on the new security measures that travelers are being subjected to. I hope he stresses what steps are being taken to make the nation's airports as secure as possible while striving to not further infringe on the freedoms Americans are supposed to have. I don't expect him to stress in the State of the Union Address how travelers can avoid, if possible, extreme inconveniences during the flying process because of snafus that occurred in an airport like Newark Liberty International Airport on January 3. That was due to the lack of screening and effective video surveillance components working in unison.

What State of the Union Address would be complete without focusing on the economy? With record deficits and a high unemployment rate, the people are looking to President Obama for leadership regarding their pocketbooks. I expect President Obama to address those issues plus the controversies of bailouts to the banks and Wall Street, too, due to the voter outrage over the bonuses these industries have been handing out or attempting to hand out amongst themselves.

President Obama's First State of the Union Address: Another "Joe Wilson" Moment Lurking?

Will the Republicans in attendance behave themselves as a whole, or is there another "Joe Wilson" moment or two lurking in the shadows of "compassionate conservatism." Congressman Joe Wilson shouted "You lie" to President Obama back in September during his speech before a joint session of Congress on health-care reform. Only time will tell what high drama this State of the Union Address will deliver.
