Obama went on to say, "There is nothing I can say that will fill the sudden hole in your hearts." As the president uttered words, prepared remarks to be exact, one could feel his sincere compassion and see in his eyes that he truly empathized with the survivors of the deceased victims, and those recovering from injuries. Obama's words, may not fill the hole in those grieving hearts, but his presence and heartfelt compassion surely helped ease some of the pain. Grief shared helps heal wounded hearts.
The president humanized and recognized all the brave, selfless heroes. Obama shared touching back-stories of their lives, love and acts of courage. His voice resonated in your heart and evoked an undeniable feeling of shared emotions. We are all Americans, human beings with a lot more in common than we may acknowledge in our normal daily lives.
He reminded us, that Americans and humans have the spirit of heroism within.
"Scripture tells us that there is evil in the world and those terrible things happen for reasons that defy human understanding." Obama did not downplay the evils of this world. He pushed to the forefront of our mind, that when we are faced with these evil acts our inner compassion for human life summons up our selflessness.
He encouraged us, we cannot allow this tragedy to cause us to turn against one another. As the president stated, we are an American family, and it is an absolute truth that the forces that do indeed divide us certainly are not stronger than forces that unite us.
While listening to the president speak about the youngest victim, Christina, his empathy was heartfelt. Although, Obama's composure and stature was strong, one could sense his sadness, as the words flowed from his lips he seemed to be fighting back thoughts of losing one of his own children.
President Barack Obama humanized the heroes of Tucson, Arizona and all members of the American family. In the author's opinion, the speech Obama gave at the memorial in Tucson was unlike any other. The words may have been prepared, but the delivery came from the heart of a fellow American, a human being, father, husband, a genuine man with a sincere heart and respectable values. The message was received with gratitude, and it was very much appreciated.
