President Obama "Ices" D.C.'s Winter Weather School Cancellations
Obama Jokes Washingtonians Need to "Apply Some Flinty Chicago Toughness"
"My children's school was cancelled today," he commented to reporters gathered at a business leaders' meeting on Wednesday, January 28. "Because of what? Some ice?"
Many schools in Washington and the surrounding area either cancelled or delayed the start of their school days. President Obama, who hails from Chicago-a city that often suffers cold, snowy, and windy winters-found it hard to believe that when it comes to winter weather the people of Washington "don't seem to be able to handle things."
Apparently President Obama wasn't the only one surprised by the news of his daughters' school cancellation. Malia and Sasha Obama, who attend the private Sidwell Friends School, were also surprised.
"As my children pointed out," President Obama said, "in Chicago, school is never cancelled. In fact, my seven-year-old pointed out that you'd go outside for recess in weather like this. You wouldn't even stay indoors."
Can local residents of Washington, D.C. and the surrounding area expect to see some changes to their school systems' weather-coping strategies? Probably not. Obama's remarks, it is widely understood, were made in a joking, casual manner.
However, as Obama joked toward the end of his weather-related remarks, "We're going to have to try to apply some flinty Chicago toughness."

oop "when he looked at the whining ...." and "told them that I won."
"
Yeah, I thought that was pretty funny, too. Even funnier than when he tooking at the whining republicans who complained that his Stimulus Plan wasn't what they would have formatted, and told that "I won."
Great article. Thanks.
In MS, if it even LOOKS like snow they close the schools! Its all about what you are used to. Good coverage.
Gurl...they NEVER cancelled school in all my years in Philadelphia. Good article.
Thanks for the information.
Interesting. We had our second snow day today in the midwest and I have to admit that it was confusing. Some schools had half days, some closed completely and the driving wasn't THAT bad. Really!
