President Obama Issues Memorandum Respecting the Rights of Hospital Patients

Respecting the Rights of Hospital Patients

Pat Anthony
A Presidential Memorandum was issued on April 15th, 2010, concerning the rights of hospital patients and their families. This followed the outcry from one person who was not allowed to visit her partner while the partner was hospitalized. The adopted children of the couple were also reportedly kept from visiting the woman they considered a parent.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the memorandum was released after President Obama spoke with Janice Langbehn about her personal experience when her partner, Lisa Pond was hospitalized following a brain aneurysm. President Obama apologized for the experience Langbehn, Pond, and their children had to endure.

Following the death of her partner Lisa Pond, Janice Langbehn attempted to get an apology from the hospital where this nightmare took place. Langbehn has since stated that the apology received from President Obama helped. To see a recent interview with Anderson Cooper about Langbehn's experience, please click on the link titled Interview below this article.

For many people this is not about gay rights, it is about human rights and family rights. Children who are adopted, and people who share a life, whether they are a couple or just roommates, are often considered family by those who care about them. Most feel individuals should be able to choose who they want with them when they are sick or hospitalized.

More details about this incident are available through the link titled Mike below this article. To read the complete memorandum, please see the link titled Memo below.

Janice Langbehn and Lisa Pond had all needed paper work, such as Advance Directives and a Power of Attorney prior to this incident due to a health concern on the part of Janice Langbehn. Langbehn has Multiple Sclerosis. It is just a strange turn of events that Lisa Pond was the person who was hospitalized. A hospital social worker told Langbehn she was not family, and Langbehn was not able to see Pond until Pond's sister arrived at the hospital.

Rule makers can not please everybody. To try would be in vain.

My gawd, this is a long time in happening. I didn't even realize hospitals were banning visitors to such a ridiculous extent! Where are their brains? Don't they realize how vital it is for patients to be able to have their loved ones visit them? We're talking about natural medicine for the mind here--everyone knows it helps lift a patient's spirits and makes them better able to fight against whatever the physical cause is for their being in the hospital. Let's hope President Obama's memorandum gets pushed to the hilt and forces hospitals to comply!!! Thanks for the info!
